What is the farthest age you could get in in civ3?

Err, modern, and the way I am playing in smaller maps I probably won't be making it out of the middle ages anymore :)

You CAN go to the space age and I've won several space races late in the 1800's and early 1900's, but that's playing on Chieftain level. I may be speaking out turn but I think the other folks who posted on this thread were probably playing at the higher difficulties (Monarch, Regent, Deity) the game moves faster on higher difficulties so good players tend to win through conquest/domination/cultural by the middle ages or early industrial age.

I'm lucky to win a diplomatic victory by the early modern age playing on Warlord level. Can't imagine Deity-level games!

"do or do not, there is no try."

I play on a super-large map, but aside from it taking a lot of time to complete the game (some people like quick games) it can also run slug-but slow on weaker PC's. I have an Athlon XP 1600, so I got no problems in that regard, but I started playing Civ3 on a P3-500 and it was sluggish even on a standard map. I can easily understand people not wanting to wait the long waits a large map can present to low-end computer users.
