Generally, I have a unit accompany a new settler to the build site, or if I just captured a city, then I assign an occupation unit or two.

My build cycle for building is:

Granary (unless I have Pyramids)
Temple
Barracks
Marketplace

New unit for defense

Temple, barracks, or library if I'm a Scientific civ, it's cheaper than a temple and gives one more culture.

Granary in the Capital to speed up settler production, barracks in the first cities radius of the capital only if I plan for early war otherwise non vet units will be good enough for MP, another granary in any cities with food production for settler (again) and WORKERS, temple or library will be build much later in cities close to the other civs. Forget about ancient GW such as pyramids at high level.

Granary of course.. :)

i apologise on behalf of "[cK]Krust", and if he does anything stupid again ill give him a kickin ;)
