Religious pressure (increase in religion spread/ how fast that religion is spreading)

I am new to BNW and a bit boggled by religion.

If all the possible religions have been founded before I can found one, what is my strategy? Will the other civs like me more / not backstab me if we share a religion? Will any of the other civs care that we don't share a religion?

If I do manage to found a religion, how important is it to keep my country free from heresy? How much effort should one put into spreading and maintaining the faith?

See the War Academy forum

http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=451

Lots of threads dealing with religion there.

1. If all religions founded, save up faith for faith based great people.

2. It's a positive diplomatic factor, but this isn't like Civ IV where a few AIs were BFF if you shared religions (and others didn't care)

3. Nope, no negative diplomatic factor for different religion. (Also unlike Civ IV, where some AIs would hate you forever if you had a different religion while others didn't care.)

4. In base game doesn't matter unless you don't have majority in a given city. Mods may be different, so if you are playing with a mod, see the forum dealing with the mod you are using.

5. Use passive ones to help your own spread. If needed kick start to your own cities via missionary. Don't bother actively spreading elsewhere since the other AIs will missionary & GP spam unless a nearby city state has requested your religion.

Just adding to what joncnunn wrote, the most excellent article to start with is Religion: How Does the Religion System Work?

If I do manage to found a religion, how important is it to keep my country free from heresy?

It’s pretty important (and not hard) for founded cities near your holy city to keep the faith, but buy any religious buildings available from the new religion before converting back.

How much effort should one put into spreading and maintaining the faith?

Until and unless you are trying for a holy war (which can be fun) you should put zero effort into spreading your religion to the AI.

You should put some effort into maintaining the faith of your own cities.

As a general rule, spread to CS, but only after they ask for it. Don’t worry about a CS maintaining the faith.

Also note that after the early game, missionaries are all but useless.

Can anyone direct me to a thread which actually discusses how religious pressure actually works. I.e. what does it take to produce a convert and which of the other religions will he/she convert from?
