I was googling Civilization and came up with this:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/71

What exactly is it? I know it's a board game, but it is connected to our Civilization any? Because it's from 1980, which is years before our Civilization, so is our Civilization based on it any? Or does anybody know anything about it?

I played this occasionally with my brother (who owns the game). It's a Civilization-type game (obviously), and we didn't think it too complicated, although IMO it's best played with 3 or more players. (BTW, BGG is the boardgame fanatics site and if you scroll down that page's link you'll find plenty of info on what Civilization is and how it works. The game mechanics are rather simple and straightforward IMO, for which reason I found the game not too challenging. A more challenging - and complicated - Civilization-type game is 7 Ages : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3870. It features 7 ages, tons of civilizations, action cards, named and unnamed leaders and what not. I made one of the available Variants for it, called 7 ages - Axis and Allies variant: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/41943 and am currently finalizing two scenarios for it.)

This brings back memories... :) This game is a precursor to our beloved computer game. After all, you start with one city, you conquer territory, you trade, you make (and break) treaties with your opponents, you strive for new technology, and Civil Disorder can be lethal at the wrong time (I know, 'cause that helped me win, one time :D).

It's sort of like Diplomacy... but not quite so cutthroat (doesn't mean it can't be, but I never ended up in any really terribly cutthroat Civilization games).

I have played the Board game many times. A unique feature is the almost total lack of randomness. Other than the almost inconsequential order of how the level 1 and level 2 trade cards are mized in the Initial setup, and determining the order in which players pick their civilization, and gameplay and event are chosen by players. It was one of my favorite games. The name of Sid Mier's game was license for the owner of the board game rights, but it is not clearly know how much the design of it came from the board game.

That game is still sitting in my closet waiting for the day to be played again... The major problem with the game is for it to be a 'truely fun' is you need more than 5 players which is getting harder to do now a days. I love that game!

Not to mention some 8-10 hrs of gaming time ;)
But a great game, that is also made into a computer game under the name "advanced civilization". Not sure if it is abandonware or not by now, but might be out on the web somewere.
