What is unit supply?

I understand that units take up gold per turn and that you need to have enough gold to support your military but what exactly is unit supply?

For example I could be at say, -8 gold per turn, but when i go to the economic overview of units it states that my unit supply is this and that based on my cities and population and there is plenty of "unit supply" available even though my money supply is sinking.

unit supply is a hard cap... ie you can't build more units if you are at/above it.

Its a hardcap on the number of units you can have. In practice, it very, very rarely comes into play. So you can safely ignore it.

Like others have said, it is a cap to the number of units you can build. If you somehow go above (Perhaps a city state gifts you a unit) all of your cities get a production loss.
