I like playing for resources. If someone has something that I want, I'll ask nicely. If they won't play nice, I'll take it.

When the later strategic resources come along (coal, oil, etc.), I tend to play for monopolies on those resources to cripple my competition.

I am flexible on styles, depending on what civ I play, the maps, my opponents, etc. I usually play with all random settings.

I'm a pretty nice neighbor most of the time until I find out you have a resource I need. If I don't roll Iron, I'll beeline for the nearest city that has it. In multiplayer, my friends have just come to accept that. So, basically I'll war if I feel boxed in or if I need an iron resource.

And God help anyone who dares DoW me; I'll burn them to the ground. Uhhh...I guess I war a lot.

I prefer to a cold war of sorts, spying and plotting and acting peaceful, until you declare on me. Then I have an army of spys to poison wells, piss off workers, and destroy mines (wells). then I take your land, and may even sell a city to a very rich player who will buy.

I prefer to let the enemy come to me. I try my best to learn to and manipulate the other side... though it can be a bit of a gambit... it makes the game fun, and I will not play if it is not fun or I do not learn something. Heck, I could beat 5 on deity with a small stack  of properly promoted/fortified units (range makes all the difference). Not fun.

I usually don't bother anyone, but every now and then I get an itch. You know. To destroy something. So near the end of the game, I will go for nuclear weapons even if I'm going for a cultural or science victory. And those giant robots are just too much fun. They'll stomp over anything. However, this one time, I did have a city in the mountains that was really difficult to overtake. It was almost like Godzilla. Lots of kills and there's always a sequel.

other: I try to avoid the warmonger flag as long as possible (for the better deals with the AI), but I like to have quite some puppets. So I keep my military small to attract my neighbours to DOW me. Then I fend of the attackers with rush buyed archers and build my own attack force to take the puppets. Later in the game I DOW on AIs that do things I really don't like. That could be a runaway AI killing my RA partners or Alex/Ramhankeng taking a second SP in patronage.

I try to start off peacefully, without conquest in mind. However, it seems you must develop some kind of army to defend yourself. Also, because it seems necessary to stay ahead in tech, I find my army becoming more advanced than others, and, well, with such an advantage, I eventually send them out to conquer if a friend wants to ally against another civ... and why waste such an advantage if you are ahead? ;)

Since I prefer Germany with raging barbs on, I have to do *something* with all those units.

(besides, they have shiny stuff and I want it!)

I play mixed, but usually do not hesitate to overrun everyone if I have a vast technological edge. Sometimes I invade a neighbor for fun, or even dow a strong neighbor for the challenge and depth of front warfare.

Most of the time I'm defensive, but if someone attacks me I will quickly build an army and destroy the civ that attacked me or leave one city over.
If a leader is really irritating me(denouncing me or "It's clearly that you are an uncivilized brute")
then it sometimes leads to war.
Sometimes I'm playing "Conquest of the World" and I capture all capitals.

(Like many things) it depends on the map type and size. Large maps (which I can barely play with my PC) I will go peaceful, total turtle. Standard and small, I will attack if it is necessary for resources or land, only on tiny maps will I wage total war, and not always then.

I'm a turtle... unless when you piss me off.
Are you denouncing me? You better have the troopage to back that up, because my war drums will come for you.

I hate warmongers, and I will do everything in my power to stop you before you ever get powerful. I'm not a klepto and will not wage war on friends, but don't get on my bad side. Just don't.

You get too close? Be prepared to pay a toll for touching my borders. If you refuse, I will destroy you. I tend to overdo my army, but won't fight unless provoked.

Am I playing as Germany, France, Greek or Mongolia? Then there will be no peace. Just war. Protect yourself or watch me collect your cities.

I've tried peaceful and defensive but once my troops have fended off the attackers, I don't seem to be able to control them. They get all excited with their new promotions and the fact that their sword has got longer or their bow turned into a crossbow and what do you know, they have accidentally destroyed a civilisation (except they must have realised they should go home for tea at some point and left one paltry city standing).
Must remember to issue a return to base order or something sometime!

My typical style is to build as many cities as I can sustain as quickly as possible and equip them with archers for defense, as mentioned before, because I know any neighbors I have will be gunning for the land/resources I am aquiring.

Once I have a large empire of land & resources which is defended by archers (or the equivalent for my tech level) I'll make sure to turn on the charm and build everything I can with happiness and gold in mind. If I notice a neighbor getting itself equipped with a large military, I'll build more defensive units as well. During this period I will be firendly, peaceful and trade freely with those who are willing to pay or make good bargains but I always refuse demands or unfair trade deals. This lets me eek out an inkling of what AIs are doing in their own empires, either languishing, thriving or making war preparations and being aggressive. I'll remember those impressions for later in the game.

If I get the technology edge, my people are happy & no neighbors threaten immediately I will turtle up and go for a science or cultural win. If however I can see a fight is inevitable I will build up a powerful military & wait for the DoW. I like to puppet cities and pick off attacking enemy units to the point where my foe is offering me the moon for peace, where I'll turn their attitude around and make them friends and trading partners for the remainder of the game.

I have never really gotten the hang of being a warmonger on my own but when given the chance to build up a strong, economically potent empire I can turn the tide and roll out with a big military as needed. I kind of think of my style as being like that of the United States in the first half of the 20th century... Strong enough to survive and adaptable enough to overcome.

I prefer playing peacefully, but in the end most of the time I go for conquest. I find that if I don't turtle, and knock over one neighbour, the momentum I've got, and the power I've got, would be completely wasted if I didn't keep going.
