What level of water coverage should we use?

60% water
70% water
80% water
Random method A:
Let the President pick it randomly and publicize the choice
Random method B:
Let the President pick it randomly and keep it secret
Random method C:
Let a third party pick it randomly and keep it secret from everyone
abstain

We chose continents in this poll.

By doing so we chose not to use the *random* option that randomly assigns both world type (pangea/continents/archipelago) and water coverage (low/medium/high). However, in this poll we chose to randomly assign land mass (aka water coverage). In order to choose land mass/water coverage randomly it will have to be done outside of the Civ 3 game set up process. At the time of the original polls this was overlooked. Since some citizens may not have realized the implications of randomly picking land mass/water coverage the issue is being repolled.

This poll will be open for 48 hours.

Random method C is the way to go. It is just like the game had a method to select continents but do water level randomly. Specifically, if I'm elected President I'd do this: Set up all of the specified options and then have my wife run a random selector to determine water coverage. She would then do the selection for continents with the water level that was determined randomly and then proceed to the next startup screen. Nobody (including me) would know what the water level is. Truly random, just like the first polls showed was the overwhelming favorite.

There are 3 random options in this poll and 3 absolute values. Will the 2 base choices (random/specify) be tallied against each other?

EDIT: Added description of how C works.

I split out the options in the poll hoping to get a clear (plurality) winner. This was done in the interest of time since I doubt any of us want to delay the start of the game. We could have done a random/absolute/abstain poll first and then a follow up poll with the three options and abstain for the winner of the first poll.

As for interpreting this poll, since we are pressed for time it may be best to just go with the option garnering the most votes. We can tally the random versus specify votes as a check. If the *winning* option is on the side that tallied the most votes then IMO we can confidently move ahead using that option.

I hope everyone knows that 60% means MORE land... :)

Didn't we have enough of tons of land in DG2? ;)

yes, i thoroughly enjoy it, the game is more fun to me if we have a larger area to expand and conquer.

Random by method C. That extra bit of uncertainty as to what kind of a planet we're on makes things considerably more interesting.

Sorry, Ek. I don't agree. I voted 60% water coverage, as I can't see playing a nation of tightly packed cities all building boats so we can expand. We wouldn't be warriors, we'd be fisherman.

Also, having a game option in the internets best Demogame being chosen by a Moderators wife sounds kind of hokey.

Might still actually be a slightly more reliable method than leaving it upto Firaxis' code, though :mischief:

I voted 70%.Happy median. Also a need to have some boats to
add some diversity to expanding.80% would be too much.
Rather be fishermen than have to be fish.

If we are playing a large map, the less water the better. Sea movement is too slow to keep up with other events in the game.

I was playing a game this past week in which the Greeks controlled most of a continent that covered just under half the map, bordering an ocean just about the same size. I came in from the northwest corner of the continent with modern armor, mech, artillery, and bombers, while sending my fleet west to harass their east coast.

Tedious, but necessary -- I was down by 700 points.

They were defending with mech and artillery, but I still managed to conquer my way to the ports on the eastern coast before the ships, without meeting any resistance, could arrive there to provide fire support.

A telling point about a glich in the movement system no one has every been able to work out of Civ III.

And we have a winner. Actually, I am shocked. WTG people!:goodjob:
