What makes Monty special?

Just wondering if anyone know the rationale behind giving Monty such a unique UB.

All other UB give some sort of bonus - extra gold, extra hammers, extra health or food or happiness, but for the most part they are fairly mild effects.

Monty on the other hand gets to use slavery at twice the effectiveness of everyone else. He can potentially use it the entire game without ever having to hold back. Its not just a bonus, its like an entire new aspect added to the game.

What gives?

Some of the other UB's are on par....the cothon comes to mind on some maps.

It's still limited by food production...which means in practice he can NOT whip THAT much more often. Also balanced by the time of game it shows up in...you're not going to get drowned in 40000000 jags because of it. It's useful I agree, but is it REALLY more useful than say shaka's, which reduced maintenance by 20% and is a BARRACKS?!

I guess that depends if you are running state property or spamming corps with environmentalism running.

Makes up for jaguars not being 6 strength.

Well, he doesn't have anything else going for him.

Aggressive, Spiritual, a UU that's weaker than its generic counterpart.

Yeah.

I like Monty. Spiritual is excellent for limited warmongering when you want to switch your economy back and forth; I'd prefer something like ORG or PHI to a military trait but AGG is fair enough.
The value of Jaguars depends a little on perspective... they are excellent for softening someone up by pillaging and stealing workers, and they get a useful promotion that sticks (I like W3). If you only ever war if you are in a position to take several cities and hold them, they are naturally quite poor.
Sacrificial Altars are awesome. They allow you to consistently whip at fairly low pop, greatly increasing efficiency. Monty has a very easy time getting new cities up to core standards thanks to this.

In short, he's an awesome choice for a economy-minded warmonger; both SPI and his UB translate directly into faster production.

well it a powerfull UB, comparable to the byzantin's one

The Byzantine UB gives the highest potential happiness boost of any of the UBs so unless you stay in slavery for much of the game I'd rate it as good or better than the Sacrificial Alter. The most overpowered UB to my mind is Willems. Thats better than the Moai Stones.

The Dutch UB is solid, but comes late in the game, so that is the tradeoff. Something like the ikhanda comes right out of the gates.
