I started playing civ3 very recently... im getting there with all the nice tips i find here (thanks for that!) , but i cant find "nowhere" something around how to let your city grow at a moderate speed

My DA is all the time crying that my city is growing slowly... i guess i do everything correct... i provide food... thats what they need, no? food to grow... or maybe its still not enough...

What makes your city grow faster?

Im now already in the middle ages and its still a very slowly growing city (all my citys are) and sometimes they are not growing at all... how is it possible?

thx in advance for the answer i might get. ;)

Basically food. You can also build a granary to let the food box stay half full all the time. That means you need only half the normal amount of food to gain a pop.

The question is how many cities should get a granary? That is a big it depends.

Also, your cities need an Aquaduct to grow past 6 (unless by a river), and a Hospital to grow past 12.

the first thing i do is (obviously) always provide my city with food, this includes building a granary... i provide roads to any square where workers are gaining growth...

So it is normal in ancient times, beginning of middle ages (even for AI's) that citys just grow very slowly???

Possibly. It's hard to say without looking at your save, but one thing you may consider is this... It only takes 20 extra food to increase your population until you reach size 6. After that it takes 40 extra food so, if your towns on fresh water and without a granary are just getting to size 7 and over, it will be slower.

One way to speed growth after you are out of Despotism is to irrigate grassland. It doesn't help in Despot because of the penalty, but in other governments, you get more food from irrigation.

Also you need to keep them happy. If they are not happy, then clowns are needed to stop the riots* unless you use the lux slider when required. You may not realise that this is even happening if you use the city governors to manage happiness.

Edit: *and clowns use up 2 food each but provide no food, gold or shields as they don't work the land

So the key-solution is just a lot of food and happy people...
Gonna try it out and see what happens then...

My thanks for the reply's people! :goodjob:

You need to research miniaturization and develop cloning technology. Then things just get off the hook crazy! A mass replication unit is 260 shields and quadruples whatever unit you feed into it once every 12 turns. However, you can build the "Gong" replication unit for 20 sheilds. It pops out another unit every other turn that entertains the population w/ song and frivolity. Unfortunately, it randomly will go on a "refreshment" break making it a bit unreliable.

Hope this helps.

[Edit: the above comments are complete nonsense and jb is known to be on a series of strong anti-psychotic medications.]

Still need to figure out what and how... im still in the ancient times...
And if you see it historical, citys did growed quite slow these days, so it do make sense..

Besides food an granary, there is a modern age wonder "longlivety" that will increase the pop by 2 every time the food box is filled. (though its pretty useless by the time its build, and is likely to just cause all kinds of starvation cycles)

An other way to speed up growth of cities, is to create several worker pumps, (preferably that can create a worker every 2 turns or so) and join them into slow growing cities.
Nothing can speed up growth like this, especially if you consider that the worker likely just cost 10 food (sup size 6 city with granary) but is joined in a city that is 7+ (40 food for growth) or even size 12+ (80 food for growth) yet it still adds a full pop point!

Another trick when you've gotten rails and have begun building hospitals (if you want metropolises, that is-I'm merely pointing out this method) is irrigate a city with granary completely until it gains enough food for 1-turn growth along with 10shields per turn. That way it produces a worker every turn. That would mean that every turn one of your cities gain a pop-point via joining that new worker to it.

EDIT: This would also be great for creating worker pumps for extra railing crew if you're short on workers.

Also, don't judge how fast a city is growing purely by what the domestic advisor says. I don't remember here ever saying, "Orleans is growing quickly" - only, "Lyons is growing slowly". So, judge by how many turns it takes to grow, or by the food surplus, but not by the advisor's words!

Look for food bonus resources when founding a city as well. Nothing helps city growth like Fish, Cattle, or Wheat, and even more moderate bonuses such as Tropical Fruit (Conquests only) and Wine help.
