What maps do you like to play?

I've only played the Americas map a couple of times, I prefer random maps because I like to explore and every map is different.

I also play occasionally on a map I made myself. It has 4 islands opposite the 4 starting positions, each carefully designed to give ideal city sites with the best balance of natural resources. The only trouble is I know where everything is of course so I don't get the fun of exploring like I do on a random map.

In your Colonization folder there is a program called mapedit.exe. Run that and it will start up the Colonization Map Editor.

If you start a new map it is all water and you 'paint' in all the islands, continents, forests, rivers etc that you want.

The map grid is 60 (wide) by 70 (deep) and it is a good idea to plan your map in advance on graph paper.

I don't have it! Could you (zip and) upload the editor perhaps? At the bottom of this page (under the advertisement) there is a link "Upload File". I'd appreciate it very much! :D

Done. It is in the upload4 file, name is Mapedit.zip. I also included a couple of text files associated with the Editor. Let me know if you can run it OK.

I checked back to see where I got the Map Editor from originally and it was part of the Version 3.0 patch - which I still have if you want that as well.

Yeah, it works!! Thanks a lot! I don't know what version of Colonization I have but it's probably ok. :)

Wait, what happened to the link?

I too like random maps because of the greater challenge in unfamilar terrain. I like the exploration aspect of the game. A third party map editor utiltiy (which works on save game files) offers the ability to edit an existing game map - useful for scenarios.

Can you please post that link again!!!!!???? I would really like that editor!

OK - I have uploaded the file to upload6. The map editor is MAPEDIT.zip (73 kb). I have also uploaded the Colonization version 3.0 patch which fixes a lot of bugs and also contains the map editor. That is COLV30.zip (392 kb).

where is the link dalgo??? also good to see you again!

what is upload6? that is probably a noob question also :(

Here's the file. Makes it a lot easier, doesn't it? :p

I've made a map myself but haven't figured out (yet) how to place resources, Indians and starting locations. Nor do I know how to play it. :(

But I did notice I only had 2.25. Could that be the reason? Anyway, updated now. Let's try again. :)

As far as I know you can't place resources and indians on the map, they are placed randomly when you start the game (while you are looking at the pretty pictures of your ship leaving the dock). You are also given one of the 4 possible starting locations at random.

Resources are random. But Indians aren't. ;) It's said in MAPEDIT.TXT:
Code:
Normally, the game will place indian villages randomly. It is possible,
however, to preassign the general locations of specific tribes if you
want to create a historical scenario. Create a file with the same name
as your map, but with the extension .MPP (if your map is CARIB.MP, then
create CARIB.MPP). Use the file TRIBE.TXT, which defines the indian
locations for the America map, as your model. Do not place more than
84 indian villages.

I'm already playing on a homemade map. I've got a fictive country, and made a map of this, pretending it's a whole continent (while in 'reality' it's no more than 350 km long). I've transformed every province into an Indian tribe.

thanks matrix!
