What must be a very noob question on religion

After conducting research for certain religions (i.e. meditation for Buddhism, polytheism for Hinduism etc.) I can't seem to figure out how to convert to that religion. When I go to the religious adviser it won't let me convert. What is required for this? The only thing I can determine is that the percentage of the population which practices the religion has something to do with it. If so, what can I do to increase that percentage? help please,thanks

A city infected with the religion.

What you may not have caught is that only the first civ to achieve a religious tech automatically gets the religion (which is to say, automatically has a city converted). Everybody else has to wait until that religion spreads to them.

To convert to a religion you have to have the religion present in the city, simply researching Meditation may not do it (unless you are the first to get Meditation, then one of your cities will become the Buddhist holy city). You will see a religious icon next to the city name if that city has a religion. Only then can you go into the religious advisor screen and adopt that religion.

My advice would be to pick a civ that starts with Mysticism, and research Meditation/Polytheism, to ensure you are the first to finish that technology, just to get a hang of how religion works.

You need to click the religion(think it gets highlighted) in the relgion screen(f7) then press convert in the bottom right cornor. And you only need 1 city with the relgion in it to convert.
