It really depends on the monitior... for old 14" monitors, and usually 15" monitors 800x600 is the best resolution. For 17" monitors, though, 1024x768 is the best. On a 17" under 1024, things look almost as big as on a 15" 800, and are easy to read, still more fits on the screen.
So, whenever I get to a 17" monitor, I use 1024x768 there. At home, I got an 8 years old monitor, which proudly wears 800x600.
Oh, and I'm really happy to be immune to the monitor refresh rate. That is, I really see NO different between 60 and 85 Hz - I see that many people can tell if monitor is on 60 Hz rate, I just don't see the difference.
