What speed do you play on?

I play Marathon exclusively, on huge maps.

It makes scouting much more rewarding, and allows me to be more picky with where I found my capitol.

How does it gimp the AI? I've never found that to be the case, in fact some AIs thrive in slower game speeds.

Lookin' at you Oda Nobunga.

Even tho im always playing it fast, i completely agree that on the longer runs you get to do more of EXACTLY what you want and where coz you don't feel so rushed. you dilly-dally on turn one on quick, and you might have lost the game, lol

Because military conquest snowballs more on slower speeds. You wipe out an opposing force, they don't have a single additional unit for ten, twenty turns. If they're lucky. By that time, you've steamrolled their entire empire.

I play on Marathon for the majority of my games. I find that any speed faster and I get into the problem of units becoming out dated by the time they are built.

I play exclusively on Standard. Slower speeds disproportionately benefit early game Civs (like the Aztecs) and cripples late game Civs. And because military units don't move any slower, Domination Victory becomes far too easy to accomplish early in the game.

The settings are there so people can use them, and I'm not criticizing that. But people should know that by playing on something slower than Standard - especially when going for Domination - you're effectively crippling the AI. You might as well be playing with random personalities and start bias off.

Seen as by that setting the AI gets on par and sometimes surpasses me, I have to say no to the above suggestion.

Then again, I am not the best player in the world.

The production and gold bonuses the AI gets, matter x10 on slower difficulties. As an example I will say that only on epic I have seen Bismark contest for victory.

Yeah, sometimes I'll use settings that are meant to hurt the AI's chances, as well. (UGH...that last Huge game I played...how I wish I had.) So long as people understand that by playing on slower speeds they're not competing against the AI like they would on Standard, that's fine by me.

I'm certainly not the best player (I lost that Huge game badly. In my defense, I had an all jungle start in the middle of a continent with at least 8 civs and only one luxury on start.). But I personally want to beat the AI the way it was meant to be played.

Actually I said quite the opposite! During slower game passes the AIs bonuses in greater difficulties matter more. You might need 20 turns say, to build a rifleman but the AI will need 10.
So in essence you cripple yourself. In King and below perhaps it doesn't matter that much.

I play on Marathon because I want to build a Civ I can be proud of. Also unlike some people seem to claim I find the game at the same level a bit harder to win vs standard (but not too hard I like to win a lot :) ). I find it no harder at the standard setting to steam roll another civ than in marathon.

I play on standard speed, partly because I hate waiting 20+ turns for anything to finish and also to bring my games under 4-5 hours. Plus my computer is pretty slow even on standard speed, I just couldn't wait even longer for every single late game turn. Warfare is also more of a challenge on standard because you have to kill the main army and additional reinforcements that spawn 2 turns later. I may try epic, but definitely not marathon.

:agree:

I would play a slower speed, but a slow speed in this game is so iffin boring, I'd get bored with a game before 300BC. Seriously, it's not worth it.

I play at epic speed on large to huge maps. I play at emperor difficulty and find it just the right challenge for the speed and map settings. I sometimes never finish a game due to it taking too many sessions, but I enjoy more of the exploration and the early to mid game, as the late game seems a bit too tedious at times with all of those units.

Well I'm certainly not a good player (I wouldn't ask so many dumbass questions otherwise) and I've been playing at King only recently. Nowadays I play on standard but I used to play quick. I vaguely remember trying out one of the slower speeds on an earth map once, settled in S America and didn't meet anyone else not even CS until I eventually lost the will to live! well it must have been well over an hour, probably nearer 2. I don't think I can have got to Astronomy though. I've never tried a slower speed since so I ought to give it a go sometime.

The earth map is not very well done. The luxury resources are far too clumped up and sometimes a city state will end up with 2-3 different ones, while others may actually get 0 luxury resources. Spawning in south america is not that easy as the jungle / mountain terrain puts you at a severe handicap compared to all the other landmasses.

I find myself agreeing with those that go for epic speed. I play at King level and random maps.
It allows me to spend a few turns finding a good first city site without it hurting me too much. Also each troop type gets it's chance to shine.

Here's another one like you. I mostly play on standard speeds and occasionally on quick.

There is indeed the problem that some ages might pass before you can do anything and some units might become obsolete in the time required for them to move from your capital to the enemy's city (especially in ancient times), but let's just say that clicking on the "next" button repeatedly while nothing happens is not quite my idea of fun, and it already happens on standard a lot.

The same here. I used to play on standard as I am newbie @ Civ V, but last time pick up a Quick one and it seemed way too better for me, as it prefers more action, without "empty" turns.

I am really surprised how many people are playing on Marathon or Epic, I thought that those speeds are playing just some insane guys, but it seems that it's not true.:crazyeye:

The most important reason why I am not playing on slower speeds is that the one match takes just way too many actual time, it's just millenium! I don't know exactly how much time I spend on one match, but it is surely a lot. My Standard games lasted on average about 420 turns, I guess I just need to improve my strategy to win faster, because it is amazing how people can end one match under 10 hours. How do you do that guys? :wow:

Marathon - always have and always will. Ive always played the slowest speed on every Civ game. Nothing else makes sense to me.

A combination of quicker finish times and a lot of experience. Once you play enough games, all of the strategies will become second nature and you'll play on autopilot. I usually reach turn 100 in an hour or so :p.
