Could someone please inform me what this is? I have found no use for it as of yet.....

In the second screen of the Game Setup, underneath the Civ selection box and above the Difficulty selection box is the Game rules; in it you will see all the possible victory conditions, as well as a few others. I don't know exactly what you want, per se, and it may be a while before you really know what you want as well, but at the top there's a selection for 'Default Rules'. Click it, it's a good place to start.

Respawning the AI players is considered default? So much for my conquest victory condition then...

No, he said to UNCHECK it. It must be checked by default.

I believe he means he checked "Default Rules", so Respawn is on in his Conquest game, hence, it will be difficult to get a Conquest win if the AIs keep respawning.

Better, click on default, and than de-check "Culturally linked starting positions" (this is buggy; you will always get the entire American culture group), and "Respawn AI Players".
This gives you what the community considers really 'default'..

I agree about the CLSL, it's buggy, but I don't think 'Respawn AI players' is really a decision that anyone other than the player should make. In both Civ1/2 I always played with respawn for some reason. I can't remember when/why I started to turn it off in Civ3; perhaps because it was harder.

I don't know, at the time it seemed "wrong" to play without it for reasons I can't really explain; perhaps it felt like "cheating"? And you can still achieve Conquest with it on. They won't respawn if there's nowhere to respawn, plus, IIRC, they only respawn once per civ anyway. Besides, what's so great about Conquest wins? I find them rather tedious...

I guess if you play with all 31 civs then this bug doesn't matter or apply? :D I'll remember to uncheck it when I play with less than 31 civs. Thanks.

I ALWAYS play respawn off. If I go to the trouble of killing a civ dead, by Gawd it's STAYING dead! :sniper:

really? i keep it checked and find the american culuter group is fairly common, but not all the time. does it work like if you get one it gives all of them?

I've always played with Respawn on. It really only interferes with Conquest victories if you're wiping out civs very early or have a low number of civs compared to total land area. Indeed, I play with it on, and it's quite some time since last I saw a civ actually respawn.

The one combination you should never have is "Respawn" and "Regicide", 'coz when the civ respawns it does so without a King unit which means that you can't kill them off - even if you destroy all their cities/units, they will still appear in the diplomacy windows and can still be spoken to (I'm not sure what they can actually do, because I was only testing in debug mode at the time...)

I spotted this in PTW, so I guess it may have been fixed, but I doubt it...

Actually its possible to win a Conquest with respawn. it is very challenging but you have to make a huge force that can conquer the world at the same pace. that would mean you would defeat all the civs in a turn and then win. at least i think it works :mischief:
