I just finished my 3rd full game of Civ3. What I did was basicly sprint up the techtree, build as much tanks as possible and attempt to overrun my enemy who was still running around with puny warriors. At least... that was the intention.
I was astounded to find out warriors and bowmen can wreak serious havoc on tanks. I lost about 3/4 of my tanks to a bunch of cavemen.... what gives? That's totall bull****!

But..... why? It just doesn't make any sense lol

It's an evil scheme by Firaxis in an attemp to rot our minds with illogical battle results until we submit to their every command, and seize control of the seat of government for world domination! :crazyeye:

Either that or your random # generator stinks. ;)

Its just the rampant AI cheating. I suspect it researches tech faster too. I'll be on an Archipelago with one other Civ, aside form 1 or two thing, i refuse to meet the AI's ludicrous offers for tech trading, so i set my tech bar to 90-100% and blaze out the techs. I talk to the Civ later on, and i discover that they are 3 or four techs ahead of me! How the **** did they do that? Its impossible for them to be that much more advanced than me when i set my research to the max! Bull**** i tell ya.

They set their tech to max too, and they had more trade than you.

Change it in the editor, or go down to a lower difficulty level. ;)
You realize that the only differences between the difficulty levels is the AI's 'cheat factor'. The higher the level, the more the AI cheats. The lower the level, the more the game cheats in your favor. ;)

Regent rules ! That's what I say. The most even game you can have... So if you loose you know whose fault is it :)
(Yes, I know, AI still cheats on regent with tech trading, but hey...)

The basic game is total bull****.

This has been discussed over and over, and yet even with the latest patch Firaxis sticks with its absurd values for units, resources, Espionage, et al.

Go check the Completed Mods forum. Pick one you like, and read the entire thread before trying it. Mine is rather accurate historically, and nothing absurd will happen.

Not even... *gasp* ... culture flipping?

I'm surprised Zouave, I never thought it possible. ;)

Oh yes, always remember. . .

playing the AI is like playing an evil ******** person.

THE ANSWER to your query is this: Firaxis has already admitted that they gave post-gunpowder units much too low values "to give Civs without a resource a chance". In otherwords, because Firaxis gave us ridiculously low appearance rates for resources such as iron and coal, it then has to give us ridiculous values for military units. :crazyeye: It is really absurd.

That is addressed in my last post in the Completed Mods forum.
Go read it.

Last night I had NINE military units, my garrison, VANISH when a town of '1' flipped in the Ancient period, around 100 BC, thus ending a game in disgust. If I can't stop this crap I'm done with Civ 3.

I know I know, I read it over at Apolyton.

Coracle/Zouave, despite what you think, there are reasons why the flips occur.

And like I've also pointed out somewhere that the reason that it flips 'randomly' is because mommy Firaxis is shaking her finger at you saying "no no no! You'd better not attack your neighbor or else!"
The vanishing units (which I hate) happen because if the thing flips and sends your garrison outside, then you just re-take the city the same turn (though the way Civ 2 shot out resistence units would be a good idea [especially if it was based upon the size of the city]). :p

They have a good point, but it is really annoying, and should be worked out another way. The first time it happened to me, I came and posted over at Infogrames complaining about the 'unit disappearing' bug. ;)

See, you got me to admit that I don't like culture-flipping okay? Please, try to be reasonable instead of complaining about it all the time. Acting like that do you really think that anyone wants to listen to you, especially Firaxis? By now they probably enjoy your whining just so they can make your day miserable. ;) :p

If people want more realism they might want to edit up the values of modern units, especially ships, which to get anything near realism you need to at least triple the BB, cruiser, etc. If you want less randomness and more certain results, then doubling hitpoints can help negate the "stringy" results of the RNG. However, by doing any of this you inevitably make the game easier. The AI, usually strong in numbers but outlcassed in tech, thrives off its refleman-killing warriors to take that important human city, as it thrives off its "super-spearmen" to prolong the war and give the human more war weariness. So modding to fix these results can make the game way too easy, unfortunately.

Yoda say, "trade you must, or lose you will".

If you try and do all your own research you will never keep up with the AIs (except on cheiftian).
