What was your Game of the year?

Eador - indie strategy game in some aspects resembling HoMM, but very original in other aspects. AFAIK there is no English version, but screenshots and video worth a look.

Notrium - indie survival arcade, original, cunning and fast-paced, but a short one (if you manage to finish it). I think coming Driftmoon (also from this developer) will be my most favorite game this year.

Tropico 3 - an example of when sequel is better than the original.

The Witcher and Dragon Age were my two GOTY games last year. CIV is still my favorite by far.

it came out last year, but Dead Space is my fave that I played this year.

but for 2009:

Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Civilization 4: The Complete Edition (my first edition)
FIFA 2010.

soccer I think makes the best translation of any sport to videogame.. and FIFA 2010 is just gorgeous.
online FIFA is a blast. you can play multiplayer where you play anywhere from 2 to 10 ten people on each team! each guy can control an individual player for the whole game.. it's pretty wicked.

but I got to give a shout to what may be the most awesome hour of single-player gaming in my LIFE. the first hour or two of Afro Samurai is just unbelievable perfection... so freaking wicked I was shouting and gibbering the whole time. "what! omg! WOAAA! siiiick! this is sooo siick!"

yeah, the first part of Afro Samurai is pure videogame perfection. I bogged down in the middle, and then my Xbox broke, so I never finished it. not sure about the end.

Machinarium was a wonderful little point and click game released in 2009 that I loved, other than that I don't think I got a chance to play many original games. This was the year that I got into Rock Band/Guitar Hero though, so it gets a mention.

I spent the whole day playing FM10 :(

Just a day?

Assassin's Creed 2, without a doubt, with HoE III in second. Though, I found 2009 to be severely lacking in games. 2008 was awesome, but I can only think of ACII and HoEIII for 9. Do note that I know of Modern :):):):) 2 and ODSFail's existence. As my changed titles show, they were both horrible and overrated.

Heh I'd forgotten Rock Band 2: Beatles! That was a lot of fun.

My fav of 2009 is probably Dragon Age: Origins. I was waiting for it for so long (read both novels), and I was craving a good RPG too. (They are so rare unfortunately.)

Worthy of mention : CIV4, Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2 (on xbox at a friend's place, it is much better than I thought it would be), Risen (love challenging survival RPGs), Borderlands, Dawn of Discovery. I lost motivation to play and finish these last 2 but they were still very good.

Total Disappointment / waste of money : Prototype (I barely played 5 hours before uninstalling, it was not bad but just not my kind of game I guess), GTA4 (grabbed the steam sale, but it won't run properly, keeps crashing and lagging for no reason),

There was also a little gem of a game : Romance of the Three Kingdoms that is not on my top list but I recommend to all those who love Civilization. It is the same kind of game (empire management), but it has a different flavor and its own charm and personality. If you love Civ but feel you'd like to... "see other people" for a while, give it a spin.

I think, looking back on 2009 - Well for a start I'm going to break this tradition of naming each and every favourite last year, as the thread is "Game of the Year", not plural - I'm not sure if it was released late 2008 or early 2009 but I definately bought it in '09 so. . .

Sins of a Solar Empire

My game of the year, 2009. When you've got a machine that can keep this sum:):):):):) going, its simply awe-inspiring. The freeform and scope of it are quite frankly, painful to attempt to understand!

The very concept of being able to create not your own planet, or your own solar system but your own galaxy is absolutely breathtaking, with a size limited only by what your computer can handle. I'll admit I have made some excessively large galaxies on SoaSE, gluttonously large in fact but do I get bored of flying my Vasari fleet around, trying to bring each and every overly large star system I can under my galactic belt? No, because it's sheer genius!

If you're a fan of the "Random world, Civilization building, Conquer all you see in whatever way you deem fit." Civilization series, then I have no doubt that SoaSE is your idea of a wet dream - Not only do you conquer the galaxy, you conquer your galaxy.

EUIII:HttT or CoD:MW2 single player

I dont own the expansion scamp. Frankly I think the word 'Expansion' and SoaSE should be mutually exclusive, if this thing got any bigger it'd be a danger to national security, maybe even global!

Downloaded the BF: BC2 demo for the PS3, and it is awesome!!! can't wait for the whole game
