What's known about the expansion pack?

I haven't been keeping up on its existence. From random Googling I was only able to determine that:

- in November someone said it was due out in Feb-Mar
- it would probably have additional civs
- it would include a rollup of all patches to date
- it will probably include multiplayer in some form

Anyone shed any light? Or have I cited all there is to know at this point?

That's more than I knew. Last time I heard, they still hadn't decided whether to release MP as a patch or an expansion. Firaxis has been keeping mum about it. All I know is that everyone is expecting the next patch in a couple of weeks or so.

I think all that had been semi-official was that multiplayer would be in the patch. But that was all. Of course the latest patch would be included as part of the installer (common practice).

Anything else is speculation. Though, some more civs make sense. Of course whether there is one single player expansion with multiplayer capability or two separate expansions is unknown. So in summery we basically know nothing still.

Is it common knowledge that there will even BE a Civ3 expansion?

yes .. that is right .... the entire expantion concept is all conjecture and rumour at the moment .... firaxis dont tell the fans any of this kind of info ..... i for 1 wont be holding my breath for the expantion to come out .... for all we know work has started on civ4 and civ3 has been abandoned :( ..... anyone from firaxis wanna blow this theory out of the water? (or anyone with proof??)

For either CIV3X or CIV4, it would make sense (from a sales/publicity point of view, save money on testing, quality, etc.) to have beta testers. But I am not calling the shots. Could there be beta testers sworn to secrecy, testing even as we speak?

So, Zouave was right, we are beta-tester! :(

Give me MP right now (or at least, keep us informed with updates and what you are doing now. INFORMATIONS)

What? How do you know that they already started work on Civ4?

Why the hell do I feel like I'm out of the loop here?

oh ... i dont know ... i havnt even heard that .... but then i havnt heard ANY info about the next patch (other than u can make bombard units kill ships) or ANY info about the expantion pack

but we all do KNOW that civ 4 will be made ... at some stage

and those 25 beta testers didnt find that air units didnt work? hmmmm musta been a long beta test

Firaxis has certainly seemed committed to making more patches. And the patches have been beyond mere defect fixes, there have been actual features added. Witness "stack movement" (even if slightly bugged), "sentry", and "improve near city" options recently added.

I have seen random quotes about the whole lethal bombing toggle for air units. (Maybe that's just in the editor).

There have been a few online discussions about new civs being added. Personally, I think that's a waste and I wouldn't spend money on that feature.

Finally, there have been developer and marketer comments about how they really wanted to add multiplayer but couldn't justify doing it in the release timeframe they had set for themselves for Civ3. A decision which I agree with, from a marketer's perspective at least.

So in a nutshell, no, there's nothing official, and keep enjoying the single-player game in the meantime. :D
