Scenario: I just finished my war with france, all they have left is a small colony somewhere out of my view. I have a swordsman army from a great leader and about 15 other units, archers, swordsman, spearman, warriors, stacked with it. My attached image shows roads and army position. I am now faced with a difficult decision, do I:

a) eliminate japan, they post no threat, have no technology, and are militarily inferior to me.

b) eliminate america, they are technologically superior to me, I however have first strike advantage plus an army to back up my troops. I could easily fortify on a mountain and watch them throwthemselves onto my blades.

c) send my troops down my roadways to babylon, who has the bowman, a severe threat to my troops, let japan and america weaken themselves for a later battle.

d) use my swordsman to rush city improvements, expand and fortify my position in the world.

e) your suggestions

America (shown here in blue) does not have much of an army, however I do have to move all my troops through Japan which luckily there is a perfect little 1 square cultural boundary which to do it through. The down side is I have no way to reinforce my army, so once they are there, its going to need to be a very strategic battle (exactly what I like). If all else fails at least capturing some of their workers and pillaging their roads in a punishment war would give me the edge I need to stay ahead the rest of the game.

I would say take Japan. If they are technologically inferior it should be a short quick war and you will jain new teritory. With the new terriotory you will get a better edge to later take on America.

Well I did alright for a while, but babylon grew unopposed and eventually just outpowered me. They somehow got an army of about 40+ knights and managed to counteract every attack I made on them.

I would have stuck around to finish the game however I didnt get literature until very late in the game and my science research just couldnt cut it, not to mention nobody wanted to make any deals with me. Once I made contact with the other Civs and realized they werent going to be able to help me... I decided to call it a quits and try a new game.

Moral of the story: Never allow a civ to grow unapposed, if you are the only Civ able to intervene. Next game those guys are mine.

I just got done playing through my first warlord game, and through the entire game no on opposed the persians(I didn't know what was going on because of lack of communications/map) next thing I know, they've got an Island to themselves, and are conquering everyone but me!

You failed to include option f) on your list: expand and take all of that unclaimed land. Why on earth were you trying to attack the others when tons of unclaimed land sat around your civ? It's much easier to lay claim to land yourself than leave it untouched and have to conquer it later. You clearly slowed your growth to prosecute a war that you didn't need to fight (why attack France when there is tons of land for you to claim?) and slowed it further in more futile warring. I hope you learned from this game that you cannot win by just attacking all the time; rapid expansion to claim as much land as possible in the early game is the first key to victory (of many).

For a good example on how to out-expand the AI, try reading this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28481

b) attack america with alliance with japan, negotiate a ROP and fortifiy your units in a japanese mountain near america. If Japan is as crappy as you say they are then the americans should have no problem destorying them. The point of this is to move the american troops out of position while let the japanese take the beating. The amercians have to go through them before they can attack you. When japan have only 2-3 cities left you can start you advance to america. After destorying the americans, you can send your troops back to finish off the japanese.

Option f) It's always easier to take unclaimed territory. You can go to war after that... And then you get all the benefits from all the extra cities you build, such as extra science, commerce and production during that war, which you wouldn't have gotten if you went to war immediately.

The problem with "f" is the difficult of defending distance cities expecially when the american are so strong and advanced. It is important to eliminate the potential threats early so you don't need to allocate too much resources later on the keep the empire togather. One thing I forgot to mention is that he should allocate 2 of his cities building settlers once the american are under control. It could get hairy if the barbarian claimed some of his unclaimed land.

Well the problem was I was playing a militaristic type game for the first time and didnt completely understand the building strategies of warlike civs. I'm doing much better on my second game. I've gained some new tricks. My only problem now is I cant seem to generate enough great leaders which is what my strategy is. I tend to rip through other civs too quickly.

I'm moving up to regent as soon as I finish this game, which I've clearly won, I'm just eager to see what my final score is.

yep, I play fairly milatirist early and you should definatly fill up all the prime real estate around you b4 attacking someone...

Then again all i do is wait for my special and land in their terriotry, then cut them off with a pincer movement.
