What's so good about Civ2?

For reference, I have Civ I, II, III, SMAC, and CtP2 (not really sid meier, but o well). I will eventually get Civ IV, but haven't yet.

I played Civ I into the ground, only really quit playing after undertaking the task of seeing how absolutely rediculous i could make the game by using the bugs, but not cheat mode. (I had 20 cities, conquered the French, Greeks, Mongols, and Chinese and had discovered Democracy in 3980 BC). (Its that "once, but never again syndrome". After that, i was ready for Civ II.

One of the things i like a lot about Civ II is its incredible flexibility in game play. You can play any number of styles and win, even with the same map and starting point.

Over the years, we have set challenges for ourselves, and found new gameplay again and again as a result. One City Challenges, No City Challenges, Early Landing, Early Conquest etc. And some of the Mods people have come up with are simply amazing. What more could you want from gameplay? Sure the graphics are no longer top of the line, but those don't make or break a game. One of my all time favorites is moria (and i still break it out from time to time).
