Whats the best way to improve your game?

Play a Deity game. Lose. Play another deity game. Lose again, but not as badly. Then keep at it until you win. It kinda worked for me when I wanted to hone my AW skills...

Here are some links that should help you:

The War Academy
Contains many strategy articles from war to trading to culture to you name it. Quality articles.

The Succession Game Forum
A Succession Game is a civ game where different players play 10 turns each then hand the save over. They keep a detailed log, post saves and sometimes screenshots, and are a great way to learn turn-by-turn.

The Forums
Just reading posts anywhere here in the Civ3 section helps.

Also, just keep trying and trying. :)

edit: Read Tomoyo's post (we crossposted). That doesn't really work for me (though it may work for you). If I went straight to Sid, for example, I would have no clue, and would lose terribly and learn nothing. If I try again, I don't know what I should do, so how would I do better? Working your way up is a more foundational approach.

Wow... this is so typical... I post a one sentence answer, and GA comes and posts a long organized answer three minutes later... ;)

EDIT: I cross-editted/posted, so I wanted to add that I went with the more foundational approach too, but I found Wacken's methos more effective.

one thing i have done is to just play a game through to a certain point (the REX phase or the entire ancient age) on a given difficulty level to see how the AI reacts and see how aspects of the game change:

-how fast is the research
-how many units needed for an early war
-how soon will AI demand tribute
-how fast is the AI expansion
-is it possible to build a certain wonder (without being then creamed by the AI because of lack of military)

basically i would focus on one aspect of the game, or a particular strategy to see how efficiently it works. then once i have honed my skills in the opening of the game and have a good understanding of what i need to do to excell, or merely survive, i try to tackle a whole game.
