What's with these dumb trade offers?

I find as soon as I have one Great Work, I get spammed with trade offers from AI civs asking for the great work in return for some small amount of gold. Or they want two luxury resources for some small amount of gold. So I'm hitting "refuse deal" over and over again. Can't the AI come up with realistic trades? It's pointless having these imbalanced proposals over and over again.

I'm glad you asked this, I was wondering the same thing.
It's particularly irritating when going for a culture victory.

hi Abaxial ,
the 'quality' of trade deals is for the most part tied to diplomacy. If you have a bad relationship the AI they will propose unfavourable trade deals. However, if you can maintain a good relationship - then the deals get much better and AI will normally offer between 7-11gpt per luxury (rarely slightly less, and often, slightly more), even more gold for strategic resources and around 19-23gpt for each work of writing.
Notable exceptions are, for example, when the AI is pursuing a particular victory condition - then, if they focus on religion, you can sometimes sell a relic for up to 40-50gpt. Similarly, great works of music can also attract very good trade deals.

Now, sometimes it is also possible to get great deals from AI that do not like you - if for example they have recently lost a number of units in a war (not against you) they may be willing to pay even up to 20gpt for a luxury (to fight off war weariness).

If the AI hate the player they should rather ask "so how much do you want for this" rather that "hey there loser, I really want your X, but I don't really wanna pay you for it. wanna sell it for a rubble and a horsehockey?

I think when you get a new great work and every single civ starts asking you to trade it, that is a minor bug that is a holdover from the previous bug that was causing the AI to overvalue great works in the summer patch. They no longer overvalue them but they still spam trade deals for them when you get them. It can be annoying and hopefully they fix it with the RF patch.

Any thoughts as to what a Great Work is worth, in general? I would have thought selling one would never be the right move unless you were desperate for something.

That obviously doesn't work as a game mechanic, how annoying would it be if AIs constantly came to you with a random one-sided deal, where you then have to figure out how much you can get for it?

There are a few better solutions, such as:
- Make AIs that don't like you much less likely to ask for deals, but at the same time, make them offer a decent amount of value if they really want something (or in other words, get rid of the low-value trade offers, unless the player offers them to the AI).
- Add an option to just automatically decline trade offers from specific players
- Add an option that makes it so you can permanently decline a type of trade offer, such as any offer that is below x gold for a luxury.
etc.

It actually gives a big diplomatic boost if you agree. However, you may not care about the boost. Sometimes though, if everyone hates you and you have extra resources to sell, might as well.
