Myself, I can't get away from Terra maps... as I like to be the first one to the "new world"

and since I'm at work right now and can't boot up civ4 to try the other maps... ;)

what's everyone's preference to play on and why?

I use the various random generators that produce some of this and some of that. Used to use 'fractal' and now I use the 'worldspawner' thing in BAT, whatever it's called. I like having as much unknown as possible.

The colonial maintenance took the fun out of Terra maps for me. (Especially since I play huge maps.)

My favorites are hemispheres and continents.

The more unpredictable, the better. I also always play with random leader. I guess I want to be surprised.

I like big and small, has it makes interesting maps with super continents and smaller island around.terra and fractal are also really good

Big and small primarily, it just looks more realistic and aesthetically pleasing to me. Archipelago I also like, certain civs such as Dutch and Carthage come into their own here, surprisingly enough so does HRE with the rathaus to reduce those colonial expenses on the big islands, plus it's another one that's aesthetic to my eyes. For maximum-war, total-slaughterfest type of games the lakes map is another one that I keep going back to.

Hemisphere with 2 massive continents and low sea level and extra civs (usually 14 total)

Your own continent is as large as a Pangaea so you get the joy of overrunning them with cavs but still you can slug it out with the other continent in industrial and modern era.

I personally like the mapscripts where the land is nice, so lots of grassland Forrests and Rivers like i.e. on Terra or Pangaea. The poorer the mapscript (i. e. Boreal, Highlands, etc.) the less fun I have, where's the sense in having 20 tiles that could be worked when 10-15 are too bad or when there is so little Food available that even only 5 could be worked. 3/5 of course again being too bad.

Torusland (basically an improved lake map with varying amounts of water and balanced resources) or Big and Small.

My favourite is the big europe map but my computer cannot handle the map being filled up with units as it is a huge map.

So I am playing the balanced map, tiny size with 12 civs.

I do like island maps but the other civs don't seem to want to invade but when I used to play the europe map and there was one water tile between me and them they always came across.

Lately I'm all Hemispheres, normal land mass, big islands. I did a Large with 3 zones last game and I'm doing a Huge with 2 now. Extra Civs added and I play with no tech brokering too.

I've been playing Perfect World with Map Scripts (and Expanded Coast which is awesome). Perfect World has Old World and New World and you can have players start on Old World or Anywhere. Also New World is not always new and can sometimes be reached due to Expanded Coast - plus sometimes New World is a bit small and sometimes it's multiple continents - lots of variation.

Fractal is my favorite with archipelago thrown in now and then for a naval game.

normal Continents,Pangea and Terra maps is too easy and dull cas you can kill evryone in the begging of game without building naval units

My favorite maps is Hempshires/Archipelago/Medium and Small/Archipelago - Snaky Continents/ etc i.e. maps with tons of water and medium land masses

imo its boring because if you kill all civs at your home continent game will become too easy, huge hempshires with 3-4 continents and 18 civs is more fun imo

Pangaea, because I like the feeling of everything being thrown into a big cooking pot. I do miss teh boats though.

I agree that the map is more fun when you can't just win the game with land units. Leaving the AI alone on their continent(s) sometimes produces a runaway Civ or Hindu-AP-lovefest-bloc that makes the late game fun.

Pangea is equivalent to -1 difficulty level.

Definitely disagree. AI sucks at naval invasions anyway, and Continents generally reduce the number of fronts/neighbours you need defend on. Besides, naval warfare *can* feature in Pangaea if you want it to.
What's the difference between running away with land/conquest on a Pangaea compared to a Continents map?
On a continents map half the AIs can't stop/attack you. (You can't stop/attack them for ages either, but once you've got enough land you can generally bending it to take them out).

1) lakes - lot of landmass, all players together, can attack or be attacked by anyone. Still some sea resources.
2) islands. completely opposite from previos
3) archi. something between

these are all I play.
