When allies attack!

Recently, I started a new game on rogue level with the french. After a little raiding of english and spanish ships (their enemies), I returned to the port I started at, only to have the coastal batteries fire on me, not letting me enter! Has anyone else had this bug? Does anyone know exactly why a country would attack someone working for them?

It could be that they made a peace and Alliance with English or Spanish without you noticing it.

what era are you playing in?
if it's in the 1880's, then it's very likely that the french made peace with the spanish, and that they are upset at you for attacking shipping in general. i've never had them fire on me, but i've had my own governor complain about me attacking neutral shipping. also, what flag were you flying, since when the governor complained to me, i was flying his flag.

Even weirder happenings...
Since the french wouldn't let me into their city, I sneaked in and reached the governor's house. Upon entering, I was instantly promoted to captain and allowed to dance with his daughter! He didn't make any comment about attacking allied shipping at all, and the french were still at war with the spanish, I checked.

You hurt the city's shippings ; ie, most likely, you attacked Spanish and English smugglers et al going to the French city you were operating out of. If you smash enough ships that were going to or from a specific French city, the city's guns will shoot at you even if you are a French Marquis and never attack a french ship.

I've had that happen in a twisted way yesterday.

I was operating out of Curacao (Dutch Duke, French Marquis, commanding a fully decked-out SOTL) and hitting spanish shipping along the main. The French attacked Puerto Cabello (the spanish town right in front of Curacao) and captured it, but because I had absolutely massacred Puerto Cabello's shipping while it was a spanish town, the fort fired at me whenever I tried to visit town. When I snuck in, the governor granted me my Duke-dom.

Free upgrades/repairs like this, combined with the Spanish spamming War/Fast/Flag galleons all along the main...well, it makes for a fun game. (Not really suitable for a sloop player, though, as a sloop doesn't really have the crew to capture and staff lots of galleons before heading to port again - this is what SOTLs are good at (at sea).

Or the governor doesn't want to publicly acknowledge being in league with a pirate and the garrison fired on what they thought was an enemy.
