which was the civ with the exploits using caravans to insta build wonders, and where you could build a useless wonder as a prebuild, then switch when the actual good wonder was available??

They have all merged now, i can remember spending insane amounts of time on marlas maps though.. can remember on one version that if one unit in a stack died, they all did (unless in a fort i think).

Theres things i miss from the old civs though, i liked building my palace.. i liked how the leaders dress changed as they modernized, i miss the HUGE fuss that was made about the wonders.

Civ 5 was disappointing after civ 5 because of dumb tactical AI that couldn't handle fighting at all. Also underwhelming were tile improvements, while in civ 4 you felt when you improved that crabs, fish or mines, Civ 5 in comparistion was meh +1 food for 6 worker turns. G&K improved game a lot, and now with BnW I can play the game happily until civ 6 at least.

Yes, it feels like cheating luring AI into war, set up a grinding machine and whittle its army down.

And border growth feels much more monumental in Civ 4 somehow, when you are a culture powerhouse, you can see turn by turn the neigbouring city got squeezed in by your cultural pressure, and eventually, bang! you flipped it. It's enormously satisfying.

Um, there's no option for Alpha Centauri...

But to be fair, I did play Civ 2 for a short time. But it really was AC and Civ 3 that got me hooked. And I had played a few turn based strategy games before, like Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

God I wish they'd make Alpha Centauri 2.
C'mon ya boobs, leave the legal lawsuits alone and make the damn game already!

I bought Civ I when I was in college in '92 and got hooked. I have stopped playing a few times: Civ 2 made me ragequit, liked Civ3 and 4 but I stopped playing for a time when 5 came out because the road maintenance was bankrupting me until G&K came with other gold-making options. If I can't get Tithes I restart because that is my early revenue generator.

I started with Civ Rev on the PS3. I don't even have a PC. Civ 5 is the only game I've ever played on my Macbook.

Civ 1 on the Amiga 500.

Civ 3 is the only one I've never spent an indecent amount of time on..it was really irritating. Fortunately SMAC also came out the same time, by the original Civ team. I loved it, SMAX as well. Those were my real Civ 3. I still love pottering with the unit creator

Civ 1, good old days of gaming as things were still original.

Think I got this game as I liked Sid`s other games from Microprose and have got every version since and will continue to I expect.

But even after 5 versions it`s still not perfect, one day........

The best thing that they done for CIV though was to allow Mods :) Bless em.

I started with Civ I as well. I'm ashamed to admit it was a pirated copy. I had no idea it was a pirated copy; indeed, I had no idea what pirating was, but ignorantia legis non excusat. I always thought the questions that occasionally popped up were just to make sure I knew history, or how to play the game, or something like that.

Anyway, I absolutely loved it, and bought Civ 2 when I saw it in the stores. Of course, my computer was incapable of playing it so I began a crash course of actually learning about computers. I had a job so I saved for a few months, my parents kicked in a little as my birthday present, and I got my Pentium... er... I can't even remember what it was. Anyway, I never really stopped playing the game. I still load up the Civ2 WWII scenario occasionally, and I still have an absolute blast playing it.

My wife bought me Civ I for Christmas of 1991(we were dating, not married yet). It went on my shiny, new, 386-33 which was about the fastest home computer out at the time(with 2 megs of ram even and a 512k video card, lol.) She bought it at my request after I saw it in stores. At the time I was also into Railroad Tycoon, Attack Sub 688, etc..

I've played every version of Civ. MMORG's cut into it's playing time a lot but Civ was always a great break from MMORPG's when I needed one. Now I'm just playing Civ again.

Wow, I feel ridiculously young reading some of these stories. Well, my love of civ started when I was really young, my brother introduced me to the series when he brought back civ 2 and installed it onto our pc and I would play that thing till it blue screened. Man I really miss that throne room. It probably wasn't till civ 4 till I realized that I was truly a civfanatic and should probably sign up for civanon (No more turns PLEASE).

Reason why I keep playing is probably because I love strategy games and have a fascination for history and ancient civilizations and civ is just a combination of the two. Plus its one of those few games where you can play with ICBMs, what can I say nukes are fun to use. I dare you Monty... I double dare you!!
