What is it that causes civs to trade you gpt, or for you to trade them gpt? At the start of the game, you can never work out a gpt deal. Do you have to "build" a good reputation first?

I believe it is when the civs get a better government than despotism they start making money, that's why they can pay you gold per turn.

I never really noticed it, but I would say it can be done, once you have a trade route with that civ.

That tends to mean a road to one of their cities that is connected to their capitol. You must have a connection from that city to your capitol. This could be done with roads and harbors. Later airports work.

If your reputation is okay, the AI's will gladly trade gpt if they have it. Usually it's at least the middle ages, often later, before they start accumulating gpt.

Yes, civs just don't make any gpt in Ancient Times.

AIs research usually at the closest (or equal) level above 0gpt. So when they go in a commercial bonus government (republic/democracy), they get a lot gpt and you can trade for it. But in despotism they just dont get enough money to trade gpt. The only exception is if you give them gpt for something (techs), after this you can get some of it back (about 20%).

If the AI civs get contact with each other the GpT capacities tend to accumulate by the tech leader and maybe the second AI powerhouse. The other civs will be usually bankrupt.Things may change during extended inter-AI-wars, which break the former made GpT deals.
