In diety 7 civs, the fastest that i finished researching all the techs (and started researching future tech 1) was in 1905. i cant seem to improve on this. When do you guys finish?? some tips will be helpful. i use ssc and caravans.

In some cases, before 1500. Other times as late as the 1700's. But that is in GOTMs. For personal fun games that are not score-centric, and modern warfare is fun to engage in... maybe not till the 1800's or even early 1900's.. Estensive war stagnates mid game research... but it can actually help late game research in some cases.

The devil is in the Details, as they say. So feel free to search about trade/democracy, etc. (use my name as a search parameter can help narrow the search). I've written volumes, and won't make a whole new 10,000 character post of rehash. I just made a 8,554 character post about airbases in another thread. Anyway, these links may get you started, and have more views than just mine, too:

Generally speaking, never. Most times I get what I figure I need and shutdown science.Usually no further than tactics for war and the obvious for space race.

There are, what? 87 techs I think. If you can average 3 turns per tech for the whole game, thats pretty good I think. That would be around 1800ad on deity.Maybe that would be "par".240 turns.

Exactly. I just get to stealth and quit. The AI can't beat me when I've got stealth, anyway, there's really no point after that.

Well I usually stop research once I've got to the point where I have all the techs required for all the spaceship parts plus Fusion Power. I don't like to ever research Guerilla Warfare because then you get barb partisans everywhere so I just set my tax rate to 7,0,3 or whatever I need to be able to keep my democracy happy and rushbuy as many caravans and spaceship parts as I need. :)

I'd have to agree with most everyone above.
Everyone seems to imply that it depends on the situation.
If I want to take over the world, I'll stop science after computers, switch to Fanaticism (sp?), build SETI, and then take it to the AIs with 80%tax.
If I'm taking the pacifist route I'll keep up scince until I have all space stuff and fusion power then drop my scince rate to 0.

Just a side note on science, my wife the explorer (she hates building the Apollo Program) is on Prince level, 1960's and she gets 1+ techs per turn and she's on Future tech 50 something.

you get barb partisans everywhere
If Barb partisans are the disease, then Stealth Fighters are the cure ;). Plus, a good RR network will allow easy control/destruction of any barbs of any type after Mobile Warfare (no more sea barbs after MW).

That's cool, to have your wife playing Civ II, too! Hope you have 2 computers, LOL ;)

hmmm, looks like your wife is better than me! :goodjob: I have never managed to get two techs in a turn, my science right now is garbage, around 1900, democracy 9 turns! :spank:

Well, my wife only does three things.

Build Settlers \ Found cities

Trade with caravans freight

Explore ("Get rid of the black")

She has it up on me because I don't usually trade until late 1800's. However, I have been learning that that is probably my greatest weakness. I'm working on it.
She can't fight wars well at all. She almost got taken over by the Vikings once until I came to her rescue and really hammered the Vikings from the other side. :hammer:

We just have the one computer though:(

i don't get it... no matter how hard i try the fastest i can get techs is every 4 turns... (does difficulty level affect techs?) how do you get 2 techs a turn?????

Is trade is that important???
I never trade...
VERY important! To sum it up, with heavy trade, you can reach AC before 1000ad. It is the base of powerful science progress and wealth. Those caravans are the most important units in the game!

For each caravan delivery, you get a number of science beakers equal to the number of gold. This boosts science tremendously. I strongly recommend you start sending those caravans!
