Generaly I don't like using nukes as I hate polution! As soon as I have the capacity though I build three or four of them.

As you all know the AI is quite stupid. Thus it always keeps an incredible amount of units (all kinds - even spies!) arround it's capital city or big cities.
When war is declared I send spies or Stealth Fighters there to see where the most units are gathered. Then, I drop two or three Bombs - not nessesarilly in a city - can be next to it.
Finally I make a paradrop or land in the city with just one unit. That way, the AI looses the troops that were supported by this city (sometimes 20-25 or more) and were scatered all over the map and in my way. Now I can more easily enter his territory and conquer places. If his empire is linked to mine with railroads then...

. I send my spies first (>walls) and then my tanks

This way I can take so many cities in one turn that the AI begs

for a cease fire! He is even wiling to pay for it.

My greatest empire 'I was france' and had managed to get both the pyramids and hanging gardens in Paris (empire boomed!). Never fought any major wars till the 19th century...my proud boast was that in 1 turn I could invade the whole of the rest of the world.

In fact it took two turns and I had to nuke...my invasion force took the Sioux nation out except for a city or two...then they nuked their own captured cities...my invasion forces (the rest of the world had fallen nicely) were zapped (15 stealthy bombers!) and I had to nuke to finish the war in 2 turns.

When do you use nukes

Ok.....let me answer for Fishheads:
"In order for me to even think of using a Nuke, two conditions must be met first:
1) I must have a nuke.
2) I must see and enemy (enemy civ, barb., etc...) or city.

With these two conditions met, I will nuke them.

Lets say for example that the AI actually plans an attack, or the barbs come out of no where with a bunch of units....and I have a Nuke near by.......well, ***BOOM*** No need for military force when you can just blow them all up. My average modern military consists of 1 rifleman per city, and 1500 nukes. I also have edited my rules.txt file so that nukes can go anywhere and I get them for free. Well I better go now."

That's Fishheads answer

My answer:

Well I rarely use nukes. I don't build many but their main purpose is to for attacking an AI capital in order to cause a civil war. I don't use them much other than that. Sometimes on the water if there is a whole bunch of ships there.

The most evilest thing to do is just nuke the cities and not take them over. Then when the AI tries to clean the polution........nuke their settlers/enginners!!

Anyway.....Better get back to work.

I love to nuke Ships!
The ships of the AI always comes in a large group(WOW is see some smart things here)!
And are annoying around one of you're coastal city's!

I hate that! But with one Nuke it's over!
And the AI turns Go Much faster! So I don't have to wait all day!

For me, building nukes is only an act of desperation. It would be about survival not about winning. I would have to know that I could not survive by any other means. I wouldn't clear up the mess - it would be a deliberate attempt to trigger global warming, along with selling off Mass Transits.

Otherwise, since it's far cheaper and far more fun to build and use engineers and howiizers, I do that instead. And I get to use them more than once.

Hmmmm let me think about that.....

Me? Never. For only one reason. They're not efficient if you build airfields all around your cities... And it's not a noble samurai weapon

I prefer be more subtle. Spies? YESSS! That's a great weapon.
According to Stormerne, it's for a desperate situation. And if you want to conquer a city, better try something else. Imagine, even you succeed in nuking, how much time will you spend on cleaning up pollution? It's not reasonable. Definitely.
Nukes = for coward!

iusuallydon't let the AI civs get that far, but if they do, i only nuke in retaliation for ANY war declared on me.

*shrugs*

if i'm best, and they screw with me, they get what they deserve.

I used to be one nuke happy tyrant. But, over the past year or so, I've adopted more of a real world perspective towards their use. Throughout real history, nuclear weapons have only been used on two occasions (Hiroshima & Nagasaki). Which circumvented a conventional invasion of Japan's main-land. A move that saved an estimated one million American lives. Although I play the game for recreation, I do like to play with a sense of realism...If you don't see my point, check out a documentary on the after effects at Hiroshima sometime.

Only against human players when they have like 10 mech infantry in one city.

I've never actually had a full scale nuclear war, or a full scale war for that matter. I usually eliminate the AI before they get conscription. The most advanced I let an AI civ get is amphibeous warfare.

it's much more fun to let them build up

cuzz then you have more targets :_)

I've tried that before. I gave the AI all of my techs and never expanded beyond 15 cities on purpose. But the AI still sucked and I killed them with my cruise missles.

Has anyone actually played a game where the AI was MORE powerful than the human?

Tsk... AI not necessarily more powerful, but as a whole, too time consuming to bother destroying.
Nukes are good!! Use them first and make sure they get optimum result by taking down most troops, and smashing a AI production city.
smile.gif
Also they arfe worthwhile in the beginning of an invasion, to take out enemy nukes in cities or rear areas that you may not reach straight out.

And to Mr G.Khan, nukes are not for cowards. It takes a lot of moral courage to unleash a thermonuclear cataclysm of imploding uranium 235 upon an Ai civ who has only developed pikemen.

Well, the main thing to remember is when you make war, nuclear or conventional, do it properly and with 100 time the force necessary!! Aim for the Schwerpunkt, and devastate their industrial heartland with Strategic Rocket Forces and your Operational Maneuver Groups...
