when does the fun begin?

There are tricks to this game and once you catch on, then you will know. I am not going to give you those tricks to the game, because that is part of the fun of learning how to play the game. I will give a hint though. Think of yourself as some emotional type leader who likes to change things all the time. Most of the time you will be building buildings and all of that, but all the other dials you end up especially in BtS lets you tweak your Civilization further. Even further in the game should Global Warming appear, you will find out how the game handles that also. Including the Modern Age of the Humans' Civilization. But you need certain reseach for certain items like stone or iron or copper or about anything. Just review the tech screen popup on the tech you think you want to reseach. Yes, the game has gotten harder to beat than the game was in the early days, because with better computer, more can be added to the game and that is what really has taken place. Although the same type of core game is still there, there is the added features over the years that keep on adding something different to the game and making it different. Once you get playing the game more, you will probably understand that the game is really made to have fun with. Like I stated, there are games you play - and play for awhile - and then get tired of the game, but then there are a few games like Civilization that become Classics and actually become an Experience instead of a game. Afterall with the proper setup - like a fast modem - and all the advantages given by this CivFanatics website like Game of the Month, Democracy games, games by e-mail, or any of that kind of multi-player stuff included, you can convince the rest of the world to play you in this game. Have contests or whatever and compete with others through playing this game.

There is a lot of game here in Civilization IV, including making Mods, Scenarios, new graphic units, and everything shown on the first page of the website and then still more if anyone wants to program it all into this game. Civ II was like that but still less at the time, and I think still a lot of people remember that game and still it can be played but faster still today. The other day I hooked up Civ I, but I lost the tech chart when they had that in the game to start up the game, I guessed, and I came out correctly to start the game, but really, it had been such a long time, I just thought to myself, heck I have Civ II, and Civ III, and now Civ IV, so if not playing ms-dos Civ, then why even mess around with Civ I in the first place. I remember how all the games look in the graphics and all that each game included that could be done when they came out and further when playing those games, but excuse me, back to Civ IV.
There are tricks to the game, so keep at it, and you may even get to the point that you are the Leader of a Civilization just because the game will probably beat you for quite a while even playing it single player -- then there is always the rest like Game of the Month here, Mods, Scenarios, and all the rest that can be done with the game and this version of the game called Civilization IV.

OK well I figured that out. I thought that when it said 70 production next to a unit's name that thats how much i needed to start building it but soon realized I was wrong. Now my problem is trying to fine iron or copper. Ive explored half the map so far and cant find any of it.

There is a resource finder shortcut (CTRL-R I think?). You'll see little icon bubbles pop up that will help you locate the resources.

untouchedninja, I was in the EXACT same boat as you, pretty much 99% EXACT! I just did not understand why people would play this game and always give it such blasting ratings!

But, its like Pink Floyd, (or any other band that is weird at first) when you first hear a few of their songs you may feel, "Hmmm, ok. Well, I guess that was, OK". But then you start listening to more and more of their music and start understanding them more (getting into them more) and it all just rolls from there. You just have to stick with it for a little amount until you finally just 'get it'.

I didn't get it for a while, I read through all these forums, strategy guides and game manuals and all, but nope, still nothing! The way I got it was by playing a game of Civ1. It was absolutely basic, and after about 5 hours of it, I got hooked so bad on that game, I thought that now I finally get it, and went to Civ4 and was just amazed at the level of depth, choice and freedom! And how the graphics where just perfect and detailed in so many ways. Hehe, Im just about to start up another Civ4 game right now! Im am completely hooked on it!

Sorry for the long post!

Now my problem is trying to fine iron or copper. Ive explored half the map so far and cant find any of it.

I hope I'm not double posting this info, but did not notice that anyone had commented on this

Some things in Civ just show up (like corn, rice, cows and a lot of other things.) Some things require you to research something before they show up...

For example, you MUST research Bronze Working before you will see copper. Iron Working for Iron... Animal Husbandry for Horses. So, if you can't find ANY, that might be the problem.

So said, some maps are just resource poor. Sometimes intentionally so. A while back, one of the Game of the Month's had NO copper or iron anywhere near where the start was. You had to go kill off AIs to get access to it. A little tough with only archers.

Has anyone written an absolute beginner's guide for this game, that might help people who have a hard time "getting it"? If not, I would suggest something with repeatable results, like setting up on the Earth map, with a particular Civ (dunno which to suggest, though). A walkthrough like such should help ease some of the pain.
