When might we get a chance to look at achievements?

Nothing.

They are completely optional (though in TF2 they can be used as an alternate way of unlocking class weapons).

Thanks Zimbu.

I'de have to agree with the majority of the posters in the thread then, I'de rather see some new information of substance to the actual game instead.

To all the people slamming achievements, A: The achievments will likely reveal information about the game itself.
B: Consider why we play games anyway, people play games because they offer objectives. Conquer my neighbour, build the Taj Mahal, win the game. Achievments offer, more objectives, things that you always feel would be fun but never would have aimed for otherwise.
I certainly know that achievments have improved every game I've encountered them in.

I'm odd?
Odd are people who excites with those childish aechievements.
I hope this super feature will not take affect on gameplay like:
"Gain 100 aechievements and you will obtain superb unit"

No I doubt that will be the case, achievements are usually just a way of showing friends (or enemies you have added to your friends list, so you can CRUSH THEM)
what you have accomplished, one will certainly be "complete diety mode" for example, which is a good way of seeing when looking at the other players achievements in your game or on your friendlists of how good your opponents are. If they have only ever completed a settler game then they may not be very good :).

You've brought a good point, but better for that would be a 'profile level' thing, far more objective. Think of Warcraft's lobby in battle.net with people leveling up and stuff. Helped matchmaking.

Except for that there's a good chance that unless the achievements are hugely generic (a possibility, yes) you could actually learn quite a bit about the game from studying them. If you read the posts, that's what most people were excited about, not "hey look you get an achievement for winning!"

But still, why would anyone want the next in depth article from 2kGreg to be about achievements in which we would have to draw clues from for hints about gameplay, even as you said,
unless the achievements are hugely generic (a possibility, yes) you could actually learn quite a bit about the game from studying them
when the next in-depth article could be about something which will definitely give us confirmed substance about the game, like more on the changes to Modding?

These Steam Achievements sound like the PS3 trophy system :hmm:.There is no need for a feature on this :nope:(Maybe after all the info on the game has been released).Diplomacy or modding needs to be on the top of the list :yup:

Sure does and in most cases its true but games like TF2 have implended them very well you can get hats or weapons after u get it one

My bets:

'conquer the world'
'be the first to circumnavigate the world'
'nuke the enemy'
'have a single unit with x amount of promotions'
'be the first to reach the industrial age'
'befriend a city state'
Ticked off Ghandi

Secret unit unlocked!

You just know it`s going to be there. I imagine it`s hard to think up achievements so they must have added this one.

What do you get for completing Steam achievements?

Achievements in Empire: Total War can be like this:

Founding father - take one region by conquest, somewhere in the world or Expansionist power - capture ten regions, anywhere in the world or Emperor of Europe - Subdue and hold all the provinces and regions in Europe at the same time.

I can then compare my achievements with other players and I can see that 77,7 % of all players has the Founding father achievement, 55,9 % has the Expansionist power achievement and finally that only 3,7 % has the Emperor of Europe achievement.

As far as I know that's all. I haven't seen that you can unlock any buildings or units but that would certainly be great.

I don't think that we're going to see an "in-depth article" that amounts to "here's a list of achievements." False dichotomy is false. (And tautological tautology is tautological.)
