When playing against CPU it's easy to win if you have Robotics

I've always looked at the units in Civ as little divisons of my whole army. I just see the howitzers as artillery units with imaginary infantry and other units attached just as real army division's do.

Yeah I do exactly the same thing

Let them the city walls. If you take the city you will get it with more inhabitants, since city wall doesn't work again howitzers but protect the people. And perhaps the city keeps it wall if you go in...

I keep city walls because cities with a population of 2 after you capture them are a real pain in the ass.

Yeah howies are a little too powerful but I think the main problem lies with the unlimited movement on railroads. Like the enemy are gonna let you swarm all over their raliways in order to obliterate them. I will not harp on about this if you want to know more on my battles in the name of realism goto "the power of railroad" thread in civIII suggestions and ideas.

One of my favourite weapons is the cruise missile. I know that most of the time it's useless and is destroyed after only one attack, but when you get the barbarian raiders turning up on the coast by one of your cities, the extra movement allows you to send the missile round and destroy them before they can spread out. I've destroyed 17 enemy units in one attack with this technique. You can use nuclear missiles in the same way, but it's a real pain having to clean up the pollution.

I'm a big fan of the traditional Blitzkrieg ... and as soon as there are bombers to match with my armor then it's off to the races. Bomb, conquer. Land bombers. Bomb, conquer. Land bombers. It's slower than the howitzer since you can only reach the cities within range of your nearest squadron ... usually limiting me to 1 or 2 cities per turn (it's nice to have about 10 or more bombers since they lose a turn landing). But even if you have only a short window between your discovery of Adv.flight and the AI discovery of flight you can cover a lot of territory. And somehow it's just more satisfying than 'howitzer by rail'

As soon as I get robotics:

I build a huge army of howies and reach their capital, split their empire, take the big cities, and then I get bored and close the game.

I think the howitzers are very efficient upon the railways network of the enemies. You can keep the city walls. The effect of an attack with howitzers on the units of the city is not reduced by the city wall. But if you enemy uses atomic bombs on yours cities before you have SDI, you can lose. So, as you spies can put atomic bombs into the opposing cities, it is a better method to win to use spies. Some spies, a bomb, a parachutist, ant then, another big city wich was full of militaries units is captured.

Against AI Howies are better than spies.

They are waaaay more efficient. With howies you can take two major cities every turn and make peace everytime...

Anyone has a different/better strategy?

I'm with heffalump on this one. Once I have battleships, bombers, and armor I conquer the world. I scour the coasts with battleships while building a carrier bomber group, then take the cities PDQ (pretty darn quick). I may have a few mech infantry to hold captured cities, but not really necessary. This is generally how I win at deity level. I rarely get as far as robotics. AI never gets railroad unless they steal it from me or get lucky and take a city.
