When playing against CPU it's easy to win if you have Robotics

If your opponent has his cities connected with railroads it's easy to cause him a lot of damage and capture many cities with Howitzers even in one turn.
If he has a very large empire it's even easier to land next to his capital city, capture it, and cause civil war...

And if the AI hasn't got its cities connected by railroad, you just take a few dozen engineers with you and connect them for it. Works every time!

This is the key to modern war, and this is why I love railroads

once you got howitzers, you have actually won the game. You can be sure that when you attack with a howitzer, you'll win.
Only problem is that are destroyed quite easily, and that's why you need to produce masses of howitzers, but once you have them, you'll be quite satisfied...

Wow, there are fanatics here
Anyway, howitzer are excellent indeed. But what you can do is, first, sabotage of city walls, and then, BLAAAM! Of course you'll lose your city walls but after all I never build them. They cost a lot to upkeep and enemy can rarely approach my cities too much

Are you saying City Walls cost upkeep? I would go back and check that. I am fairly certain, 99.99% certain, that they cost nothing. The one thing they do cost is time, the time to make them. But they do double your defensive abilities against ground troops that don't ignore them, so I feel they are worth the time to create.

As far as robotics, It doesn't help me out that much. By time I get that far in the game I am tired of playing and don't pay much attention.

Yup. City walls cost nothing (wich is quite unrealistic actually).
But I'm also sure 99.99% that the ONLY Howitzers can beat a well defended city (city walls, coastal, SAM).

To be more precise... City walls have inherent cost of 1. If you have Adam Smith Trading Company, then your covered.

PaleHorse and Az, you are right.
GenghisK and CivGuru, I'm afraid you are wrong in this instance.

I suspect GenghisK is getting mixed up between CivI and CivII.

The definitive answer is this (from the Civilopedia):
In CivI upkeep of city walls costs 2 gold per turn.
In CivII upkeep of city walls costs zero.

So Adam Smith does not need to help you with city walls in CivII as they're free upkeep for everyone!

Howitzers are invincible. I played that WW2 scenario that was on the CD as the neutrals. Built up a (huge) force of howitzers and took over Germany.

Look at the topic title guys. It says "when playing against AI". I know that Howitzers are not always efficient in multiplayer.

I love stealth fighters. They are great against barbarians who usually have very poor defence values. Usually by the time I have Stlth. Fighters, my opponents are still figuring out gunpowder. Its 14 movepoints mean tha I can attack at least 8-9 times before getting back to base and refuelling.

Also I think some of you got stuff wrong in your Earlier messages. Here ar th correct Stats about the city wall.
Cost:80 shields
MAint:0
Increases Defence of units in cities by 3 times

Howitzers are mighty indeed, perhaps a tad too powerful for my taste. Naturally, such sophisticated artillery units are darn powerful, but how often in reality do batteries of artillery win any fight by themselves? I am no expert, but I have a feeling this is not all too often...

As for city walls ( being a city wall lover ) I can also state that they cost no upkeep whatsoever in Civ 2, as opposed to Civ 1. Besides, with all the bonuses I get from them I nearly always build them. Perhaps if I have some bottlenecks connecting my land to the other Civ's with lots of forest, hills, mountains, river or whatnot I might build a lot of fortresses there and thus defend the border instead, but otherwise it's city walls for everyone!

Yeah you're right...Howitzers are an unrealistic unit...

I've always looked at the units in Civ as little divisons of my whole army. I just see the howitzers as artillery units with imaginary infantry and other units attached just as real army division's do.
