When we get the Civ 2 source code...

What's all this talk?

I tell you, I turn by back for a moment...

Look, there is no response because Civ4 is a big priority right now and people in this industry really have to be hassled repeatedly before they'll be bothered to look into free stuff.

Let's face it, getting the code released is at the very bottom of anyone's list of priorities--minus us. Not to mention that the code has changed hands three or four times (I've lost count) since Civ2:ToT v1.1 was released--assuming it has changed hands and wasn't just lost in the chaos way back when MP went splat--so even if it exists, who has it? That's really the biggest problem: the CtP code was released by the same company that developed the game whereas the Civ2 code would have to be released (if it exists) by a different company from the one that originally developed the game.

The thing right now is to determine if someone has the code. AFAIK, the law requires only that Take-Two authorize the release--Atari/Infograms may still have a copy, for example. (If it's a matter of technicality, the party that has the only existing copy can 'give' it to TK2 and then they can officially release it.) Heck, even Hasbro might still have a copy (they would have the ToT v1.1 code as I understand it). Someone has to talk first. And thus far, nobody from the above-mentioned companies has made a peep because from what I've read here, the only person that has been contacted so far is at Firaxis.

- there is often / always third party code involved (graphic / sound engine, ...)
- it would show to the whole world how crappy the code can be.
No third party AFAIK (at least none that still exist).
Code is already so old that nobody would care. The only people who would actually see it would be civers--and they won't complain...much. ;)

The source code for the first civilization should be released first. After all, we've been waiting longer.

Plus, civ1 for $25 is a great deal. It's better then *any* game sold at *any* price so I don't see why you guys are so OMFGWAHTARIP about it. *sigh*

Civ1 is a great game, but cmon...

Cmon? About what?

Pfff. Civ1 doesn't have a whole page dedicated to it's "A.I stupidies (sp?)"

Civ 1 and Civ 2 are both great games, no need to argue...

Anyways, I would LOVE for them to release the source code. I doubt they will though, simply because its probably lost. Civ2 was made by microprose who is now dead...... Ah well, atleast Civ4 is coming out in a week or two.

That doesn't mean there aren't any...
...It just means that they don't effect the gameplay as much, are hardly visible and they're rarer.

Or that so few people still play a 14 year old game that first came out on DOS, that no one really knows. Take for example the fact that you have to build a diplomat to go talk to an AI civ. The AI can just contact you at will. How is that fair?

Anyhow, the fact remains that Diplomacy in Civ1 just plain sucks. You can't forge alliances. Enough said.

Sir, you're example is flawed.

The AI can *not* talk to you at will. Rather, the game itself sets you two up. Everytime a unit is moved next to another civs unit there is a varible chance of a contact. Also, you never really see enemy diplomats because diplomats are only visible to the owner civ.

I stand corrected:)

However, I still think Civ1 is too primitive. My biggest beef is the limited diplomatic options.

Is anyone on this forum confident that Take2 owns the source code?
