I'll wait until I can play it outside of Steam- and the likely final version.

If Steam hadn't been forced on me- Day 1.

I encourage others who feel the same way to change their title.

Steamworks is fundamentally integrated into the game. You are never going to be able to play without steam, you are living in a fantasy land.

Bargain bin. I was a 1st day purchase until this week's news about DRM that requires activation for the game to work. That devalues the product enough for me that I can see myself picking up Civ 5 Complete for $5 in a few years, instead of buying the game and its expansion packs for full price.

+1 Bad move 2k. I voted first day, I was just clicking and forgot about the DLC for a minute, but for sure it is not first day now.

Probably a couple days after release.

Oh, It kinda bugs me how many people seem to hate on steam without giving a full reason. I use it a lot, the only real problem I notice is the occasional maintenance, and that only really disrupts the friends server. The only foreseeable problem I can think of is not having an internet connection when you want to activate it.

... I just hope they don't add achievements.

Edit: They did. Damn.

I once made the mistake to buy a game "unseen", i.e. on release date. I loved Master of Orion 2 so much, that I bought MoO3 as soon as i could get my hands on it. And it was crap...

I also loved Master of Orion 2 and so I made the same mistake and felt the same pain of disappointment.

But I will probably be weak and either pre-order or purchase on release day. I suppose I'm one part fool and one part optimist.

I was definitely excited about Civ5 and was planning on getting it the first week if not the first day (I would prefer Steam to not have been required, but its not a dealbreaker), but then I heard about the whole "standard" and "deluxe" edition and the DLC.

I have to say, Firaxis lost a lot of respect in my eyes then. I'm not even sure if i'm going to get it anymore.

Okay... I know people love to hate Steam in order to prove how leet they are and stuff and that's fine. However, you're really gonna have to decide just how much your hatred is worth. Steamworks is built into the game. This isn't like Civ IV where it was Steam enabled. Steamworks is a library that provides built-in support for messaging and voice communication and multiplayer matchmaking, as well as some candy such as achievements. Saying "I'm going to wait until Steam is patched out" is like saying "I'll buy Civ IV when Firaxis patches out Multiplayer." It's part of the game. It's not going to be patched out. Of course, voicing your belief that this is possible simply means you don't understand the system.

More importantly: For those of you who are actually buying the game, let me make a suggestion: Pre-purchase the game. No, I'm not trying to shill for Valve or 2K or Firaxis. If you're worried about playing the game on Steam, then do yourself a favor and pre-purchase it via Steam and let Steam pre-load the thing for you. I don't know how popular Civ5 will be, but release days for AAA titles tend to get busy. If you have a slow link, the last thing you want to do is to be one of the people stuck behind a loading dialog as hundreds of other users in your immediate area choke the download servers.

Now, perhaps those of you buying the DVDs will have a quicker validation. It will certainly be better than those downloading on the first day. However, experience has shown the people who pre-purchase and pre-load are off and playing their game while others are complaining about crowded servers. The other way to avoid this mess is to simply not install the game until a day after release. If you can, wait two days and whatever errors might exist with the installation will be resolved already.

Now, for those of you looking for ammunition against Steam: Yes, release days on popular titles suck. This isn't any more of a weakness of Steam than it is for movie theaters. If you're going to boycott a game because you had to wait a little while to play your game then I don't have much more to say.

Normally buy immediately, but due to DLC related concerns, I'm trying to decide whether I buy it discounted or not at all.

I love posts that go to great lengths to explain rational behavior to everyone, such as this...
I can tell you that I couldn't even make it through the first paragraph of this blurb, but thanks for the pontification nevertheless!

I'll probably pre-buy it at some point over the summer. The whole Steam thing doesn't really bother me and I'm looking forward to the game.

I dont buy a game that need Steam to play it. So my hope is that they will remove the Steam parts for the bargain Versions or when it will be aviable at other Digital Stores but if not I simply will never buy it.
Without Steam or other Online Requirments I probably would have bought it on release.

I know ill be buying a dvd version, still not sure when. As some people have stated, steam was on 2ks side not fraxis, and sid may have no idea whats going on with steam. So according to that the game dev team hasnt put steam into the game yet? And dont kno what its for?

My guess on this mess theyve made in terms of steam is that they 1. Couldnt put together a workable system for mods ect 2. Maybe are running way behind, and steam seems to do just what their looking for and is easy to patch into what theyve designed so far. 3. Steam deal was inked a way long time ago, and thats where the whole idea behind getting mods in game came fro

Without knowing really when the deal was made, id have to go with 1 or 3 but 2 is just as likely.
I would have loved to not kno about civ V and come across it 3 yrs from now and buy it once the dust has settled. Thats the only way i could wait that long, so ill have it after reviews and people who plan on playing offline post their experiances. Hopefully that happens sooner than later.

Wow! Lots of Steam vilification. Sorry I didn't realize this would be a factor when I made the poll.

However, it looks like about half of all people will be buying within the first week of release. to be honest, I'm surprised the numbers aren't higher. I thought there were a lot more people with no self-control than that. Something I'm glad to be wrong about!

I was under the impression that Steam was just an option this time, that if you bought the Steam version you got the Babs and such, but from what I'm seeing in this thread, that's not the case. I'm not sure how that affects my decision. I have a gut-reaction to decline to buy it, but I try not to let my gut-reactions be the boss of me when I don't know why they're there.

This is how I look at it. Steam is a Home Console system like your Xbox or PS3. You buy games for each system and play them. Civ V is now a Steam Platformer, which I can say is better than the Xbox/Windows Live counterpart.

I will be pre-purchasing it on Steam. I would also like to say that modding will be no different than for Civ IV is now. The only difference will be that there are 2 or 3 folders between X:\ and Civ V folder but this will allow for a more streamlined approach to modding. Since the core folders under steam wont change from user to user... unlike Civ IV where there was 2 different folder sets for it.

There is 99.99999999999999999...% probability that you can't legally play Civ 5 without Steam. There is also 99.999999999999...% probability that there will be less than legal ways to play Civ 5 without steam, at least it's single player part of it.

Oh and I leave my choise up to your imagination ;)

You can't play it without steam. Even cracked versions of steamworks games work on the basis of a crippled version of steam running behind the scenes rather than somehow detaching the game.

Sorry buddy.
