A number of reasons for me.

Occassionally I stop when I feel as if I've "lost" or feel as if I've gotten in over my head and the other person knows far more about the subject then me. Why make yourself look dumber then you have to after all?

Other times I stop when my debate turns into a circular argument with one particular poster and I realize that its just going nowhere.

If I start to get really angry I also try to back off (out of the thread) before I say something I'd later regret. Been there - done that before.

I'll be honest and admit that I'm not a very smart person, so I slip out of most discussions that I begin to lose in.

On the other hand, the posts regarding U.S.-bashing and nationalism definantly do it-enough I consider it my primary reason. I'm basically a patriot myself, which to be fair'll cloud enough of my views, but I've seen nationalism from others both in my nation and others' that absolutely get to me-I stop posting when I realize they won't shut up on their views at all.

Well, I usually don't stop posting at times as my final reason-I'm a hothead either way. :P

Sometimes RL just gets in the way for a few days and the inertia to keep posting in a thread goes away. Sometimes the thread takes a discussion turn that doesn't interest me, so I go away. On some occassions, I fall away exhausted. There are even times that discussions end by mutual agreement. More commonly now, posters drop out of a discussion before me.

On the other hand I often enter discussions that are on going because I notice the most interesting people posting in them. There are about a dozen of you that I avidly follow and always read what you say on any topic. Your posts will get me involved in topics and start me posting.

Usually because there's too many threads (another one catches my eye) or real life distracts me and I just don't feel like starting to talk about it again. Sometimes because I won, though.

Almost always because I get too busy with RL, occasionally because I want to read other threads.

Other reasons for post stop;-

1) I know I'm right and I'm going to start googling. Then I forget what I'm googling for.

2) Other posters have such silly replies they aren't worth a reply.

3) Thread has gone so off topic I don't want to reply.

4) Thread is so on-topic and I'm not really interested in continuing.

There's loads of other possible reasons too.

I'm not a fan of online debates, and so never actually participate in debates. In a poll, I give my answer and then leave, forgetting about the thread as soon as I leave it.

There are to many darn threads that dont interest me :p

None of the above. I quit posting because no one has made anything resembling a new response to any of my ideas/posts, and no one has posted anything that is either new or worth replying to. On rare occasions, I'll simply leave a thread because it has become more work than its worth to sift through spammers and trolls to find anything worth replying to, but the moderators are pretty good about slapping those dingbats around, so that doesn't come up very often. Ignore comes in quite handy for dealing with those type too.

Maybe it's because you haven't responded to the old ones yet...

When the discussion is continuing in a path which interests me less or when people don't answer me anymore. As everyone I guess.

Possibly the same situation with me.
