Where has all the reagent gone?

Okay, I have noticed recently when I play that I am constantly finding myself in worlds with no reagents. Not one or two, but none. I have tried multiple map types, climates etc... Still nothing. I just tried 7 maps in a row and did nothing but explore and still couldn't locate any.

This is a huge issue if you like mages or try and play any civ with reagent based priests. Is there a trick to this or a new wrinkle in a recent patch (been playing FfH since original and I just noticed this in the past month. Or is this just a total coincidence?

Its an issue with reagents being the last resource placed. Certain resources, like the metals, reagents, and I think incense and a few others cannot be placed too closely to each other. So, if all the available spots are taken before reagents are placed, you don't get any.

When that happens to me, I will usually go into world builder and add one. To make it seem like I'm not cheating, I wait until I have a great person or the Dragon's Hoard or something else to delete in world builder.

What size map are you playing that may affect it?

Oh and Snarko's options mod allows you to add any number of extra resources (including reagents), but I don't know if it has been updated to the current version...

Snarko's options

Only works up to version 22 though...

Yeah its funny, I am usually swimming in incense, but reagents (and gems, now that I think about it) are uber rare. Makes rolling the dice on on the gem and reagent based priest civs.

I play standard maps and sometimes large. I do like to add extra civs so if reagents get placed last, that certainly wouldn't help matters since the civs take up space.

About the gems, I find them just as rare sometimes while often times I'll see piles of gold in desert hills (also located near some floodplains at that..) and maybe, just maybe a gems in the middle of a jungle if I'm lucky. With a mine, gems are just one :commerce: lower than gold and only of use to RoK priests.

Yeah the gems are only needed for one civ as a pre-req, but when that civ doesn't gain access to mages, that is a huge deal.

Make sure the "balanced" resources (change from standard to balanced) is checked under the map options. I too had no regeants, but with it selected they popped up. Some maps however dont have this option (such as hemisphere maps), while custom_continents or terra do.

I had that issue a lot since I played like, living world, blessing of amatheon, barbarians already in, and every civ possible.

Changed to the creation mapscript and changed to only one of each race and worst I've ever had was just two on the map.. both in sheiam lands.. so I had to go to war heh.

Yes, and also, if you have Earth mana (and even if you don't), there is a chance one of your mines might get Gems. Not so with Reagents.

I often find the Incense lacking too, although when I am playing the Grigori, that is a pretty useless resource.

I still would like to see some game mechanism that allows you to get strategic resources in a similar way you can get Gems, Gold, Copper, etc. from mines. Or, have a Wonder you could build. Or an event. Or something.

I would argue that finding gems is harder than finding reagents... and a ROK civ without gems is a very sad ROK civ. Perhaps gems should appear on hills instead of / in addition to jungle...

both selecting additional civs and selecting the blessings of amatheon options reduce the amount of reagents found on the map (and that of mithril aswell i think). Selecting less civs per map size and playing without blessings should fix it

Err I had 5 last game --- big & small or fantasy. Immortal setting, huge, barbarian world, no blessing. I thought it was so weird as I only had 9 cities.

edit: excessive cotton too

Fantasy map, you say? Did you check the settings? I recall the fantasy map likes to have a lot of "fun" with the resource placement.

Good stuff. I always play Barb World, Blessing and whatever the other two are that pop up right under DEBUG option. Bummer I need to turn off Blessing, but so be it. Far less frustrating then getting 2 or 3 hours in and realize I am boned on a major resource.

That's true. If you select Irrational or Crazy as the setting for your map. You will not only get an non proportionate playing of the resources, but they show up in very odd places - Bananas in deserts, Corn on Ice, etc.

I always use the third setting which gives you more normal placing.

Why is that?

The Gems do provide some happiness, but the main thing is that you cannot build Stonewardens. I think the impact of not having reagents (unless you are the Khazad) is more significant.

One way of solving the Incense and Gems (Reagents for AV) scarcity for civs' religious unit requirements is to not have it.

I agree that it makes more sense to put the Gems on hills tiles than jungles.
