I've lived through enough of modern history to be intrigued by how the game will handle it - from Robber Barons o the 19th century
:eek2: You're old!

I am also skeptical of this, but what I am hopeful they have achieved is making the modern age feel competitive. So far though, from what I have seen, I think that they have deterred snowballing. But we will see. If the modern age is just as exciting as the exploration age, I will be thrilled.
You know, even if they haven't made it any better - they've made playing a single age more enticing than ever!

I'm looking forward to each one, and I think it's because you can win each age. I got a chance to re-watch some of the live streams and I started liking the idea more and more of working towards the legacy paths and then the victory path.

The more I think about the ages and what we have learned about each one, the more I think that, when it came to finishing games, my issue was with the mid-game more so than the endgame.

Which means the obvious answer to the question would be Antiquity and Modern ages in my case, since I enjoy those periods the most.

What it really means though is that I'm a little apprehensive about the Exploration age. What has been revealed so far seems to force me into playing in a way I often opted out of during Civ games. I wonder if I'll face a similar mid-game drop in enthusiasm, or if what seems on its surface to force me to engage with systems I didn't always want to will instead make it more fun this time.

We'll see. I'm worried about the Exploration Age, but excited for the game overall.

Well I thing that is limiting it.. they basically had 3 plays
Get Settlements in Distant Lands (Military/ Economic Win)
Spread your religion (Culture/military Win)
Develop your cities (Science Win)

It's so much about how many mechanics are available in the age, but that some of the ones that they seem to have built the age around are things that I didn't always want to engage in previous Civs. I have to admit, they make sense for the age in this system where the ages are split up so distinctly, but I find myself wondering if this will make me dislike the age of exploration or if the way it's done this time will feel more fun to me.

Specifically the things I'm thinking of that would lead to my mid-game doldrums are building a navy and, depending on how the game played out, spreading (or containing) religion and settling distant lands.

That's kind of how I feel about exploration. But... To put a positive spin on it, so far we have multiple civs with asymmetric ways to score in exploration - Mongolia conquering homelands, Songhai with homeland treasure fleets, Majapahit getting relics from districts. I think firaxis are aware (or at least subconsciously are so) that exploration victory conditions look like they skew your gameplay more than the other eras, so there are civs which act as "outs" if you aren't a fan. I'm personally hoping we see a lot more of these! Including in the other ages!

And one thing this thread has made me remember is that the map expansion mechanic is really, really cool. A lot of people have mentioned it as the reason they voted for exploration, and as much as I am down on the specifics of exploration era gameplay revealed thus far, that overall concept is very fun.

That’s when you go “science win” and expand in the Homelands to setup for a strong Modern game.

While the majority of my games would be the full game, I agree single age games look interesting and may try them when I don't have as much time

I quite like the exploration part in 4x, so antiquity is probably the answer. With how they limit exploration and by the time you hit mid game you are more established, i can see explo being my favorite era. I need to see more of the modern era to have an opinion on it. It was a drag in Civ 6, less so in Civ 5.

I usually never do advanced starts, but I can see myself playing a single age to get an idea of how an exploration/modern civ or leader plays.

Figure out a path I'd like to try that would form a solid foundation for them and restart a full game aiming to use them later.
