i see there are several civ2 game ?

1) plain Civ2
2)civ2 gold edition
3)civ2 test of time

which one is the best to get? and is there any difference between them?

thanks

I would advise against TOT (#3).

Civ 2 MPG is good because you can play all the scenarios and have multiplayer. Plus, you can always 'downgrade' that version to 2.42, so you would have #1 and #2 at the same time.

#1 has a friendlier AI, #2 gives you the full range of game play options, and #3 sucks (from what others have said ;)).

I play 2.42, but that's mostly because I'm too lazy to download the patch for MGE and because I need plain civ2 for the demogame.

So, I agree with DoM that you probably should get 1 or 2 and then up/downgrade to see which you like.:)

If you can find any of them, buy them all straight away.

2.42 is the best place to start with Cedric's update(which works on XP BTW) you can have 2.42,FW and MGE

so all the version are the same once i get one.

so it will make all the different types civ2 games out there the same, once patch is updated?

Just try to find a copy of the original Civ, install it three times on your HD and patch one to FW, and another one with the MGE-patch, both found on this site.

"I would advise against TOT (#3)."
Absolutely NOT! If your local gamesshop sells it for $40, buy it! Install it two times and patch one of them with the no-limits add-on and the MGE-GFX (or something like that) to get a the best Civ2 game ever!
ToT is actually a collection of five games:
-The original civ
-The extended original Civ, where your Spaceship is to the end of -the game but a second start on a whole new planet (you play at two maps at the same time)
-Civ in a fantasy setting, with elves and goblins on four maps at the same time
-Civ Midgard, same as the one above, but is a scenario with loads of scripted events. It adds an adventure element.
-Civ Science-fiction. Almost like Alpha Centauri. Your spaceship lands on a unknown planet and you try to get back to earth.

Just download Civ2 somewhere from the net (I did) and patch it and buy ToT when you get the chance!

$40? You must be nuts! Nowhere should be charging more than $13.00 for ToT, got mine from Electronics Boutique for $10. Anyway I would also suggest ToT if it compares in prices to the other available versions of Civ2. Install it and upgrade it to official version 1.1 and repeat 2 more times, it is important to upgrade after each install. The first install you may want JB's no-limits patch and a graphics mod, I am partial to the MGE-gfx one myself ;) . Second install, download the ToTtoMGE downgrade from my site and install that, you may also want JB's no-limits patch or the no-CD crack. Third install, also use the ToTtoMGE downgrade then download the MGEtoFW downgrade and install that. You now have a copy of all versions of Civ2, the FW downgrade includes the CiC and Classic .exe (Civ2scen.exe and Civ2orig.exe respectively)
Then again that's just my opinion...

whats version of civ2 is there? and what is the differnce between each one? i see FW, TOT, MSG, and plain civ2

and does it matter which civ2 i find in the store? is there a patch to make only one install have all the versions there is of civ2 ?

or do u have to do seperate installs and have each version of civ2 seperate?

why would u do that?

thanks

Plain civ2 (or civII 2.42 after upgrades): No multiplayer, less aggressive AI, not many scenarios work in it.

Civ2 MGE (Multiplayer Gold Edition): Multiplayer, many scenarios work in this one and the AI is a lot more aggressive, and probably something else...

FW (Fantastic Worlds): I'm not sure what's the difference, but I think there are options to play games that have different graphics playing with other races? Don't take my word for this...

ToT: Also some kind of extension to the game, you can continue on Alpha Centauri after you've landed there. I think someone wrote about it above.

Not much of help, but hopefully someone will correct it.:)

Fantastic Worlds introduced the events.txt scenario tool most significantly. Many of the fine scenarios were made with FW.Having a copy of this allows you play many scenarios as authors intended without the hostile AI attitude bug of MGE.

Definitely check either Ebay or http://www.egameuniverse.com for ToT...I just bought my copy from them for 4.99 through Ebay...last time I saw they still had some copies left, if you're interested, drop 'em a line!

EDIT: Misspelled "time"...dumbass...

test of time .. the graphics are attrocious ... i can hardly see the units and im sometimes confused what squares they are on.

**The only thing that might suck about ToT is the graphics, and that can be fixed.**

they can? how? test of time has some very nice features to it but wont likely try many of them because i hate the graphics. can they be made to look like the original layout?
