I'd have to say American's, the industrious and expansionist traits are awesome together. Even though their UU sucks the traits more than make up for them, I won my first Deity game with the Americans.

Like sluggy-boy said, it depends. Depends on what you're trying to accomplish, on what type of map.

India-- elephants come just at the right time for a cluth of GWs and no resources!!!
Commercial and religious is a solid combo:thumbsup:

In PTW and Conquests, Ottamans are the best. They're scientific, so you get a free tech every age, and libraries are cheap. They're industrious, so you're workers will work the land faster, and that makes for a better start. Then, when you get military tradition, you have Sipahi. They are awesome. (8-3-3)

In vanilla civ, Persia is the best. They're also scientific and industrious. And, when you research iron working, and get some iron connected, you can start making Immortals, and they are fairly good for early conquest.

I picked Persia simply because of their two great traits and their awesome early UU. My other candidates would be Japan, China, Ottoman, and Maya.

Brewster ,you make great points about Persia; they are my arch-rival.I must insist that my mounted warriors are dominate in the ancient world. My "gallopping gangsters " can be roaming the world razing and pillaging while the best defending unit is a spearmen!EASY PICKINGS!

I would just like to point out that England has a major advantage if used to its full potential. As a seafaring nation in C3C she can (by the middle of the game) quash her enemies' hopes of expanding via the oceans thanks to her uu and whilst easily extending her own arm all over the world.:D

However, this takes time to come into effect, and the period before that could be  very bad for England unless the expantionist ability is made full use of;) .

There is a horrible but growing feeling at cfc that whilst the English trait ought to be better than the dutch, the English flatter to deceive. There is a horrible but growing feeling that a civ's capabilities are in some way linked to soccer.

Anyway welcome to CFC:band:

Ottomans for me. They have it all great traits and UU. If I can make it to the late middle age and pull the GA the AI is in trouble!!

I thought I knew, till recently when I decided to try a game with a random civ, got Sumeria, and found out how much they can rock... This caused me to decide to win a game with each and every C3C civ, to find out who really is the best...
Before this, I would have said Persia for VC3, Ottomans and Carthage for PTW, and Maya, Byzantines and Carthage for C3C...

China would have to be my favorite civ. The Rider is to me one of the best UU's in the whole game. that extra movement early in the game makes them EXTREMELY speedy in the early game. Especially since the AI seems to rarely have a good road network set-up for counter-attacking. Not to mention the traits are very good for warmongers. Militaristic gives the chance of getting armies much quicker, which in turn means even faster destruction of the enemy. Industrious helps set-up road netoworks quickly, and make your empire more productive, in a shorter amount of time.
IMO if your out for warmongering China by far has the best advantage.

ottomans is the best with uu as well as traits.
then persia, and possibly i would choose china as the third one. their uu is awesome but i am comfy with horses..:)
i dont see any real advantage for america with uu. ..sorry to all america lovers !! :P

Personally I like America. Early expansion, means setting a powerful empire from the start and the C3C F-15 rules the Modern Age.

When I look at the best traits and UU I think of using America or Persia. However, I somehow always lose when I play either of them and always win when I play as the Iriquois, I don't know why. I think it's the expansionistic trait and the UU witch acts as a good early explorer and attacker.
My vote for Iriquois.

Vanilla Civ, random map? Persia easily! IMHO they have the 2 strongest traits & arguably the best UU in the game.

Everyone seems to dislike the Romans, Russians and Zulu ;)

I didn't even notice that they were all old civs when I read the poll

Persia, definetely, of the old civs, though Egypt is a close second (even with the >_< UU).

Good point...any fans of Russia out there?Somebody has got to have something good to say about them....I think Persia gonna win this one (as expected)

I am not a fan of Russia but, however, recently I decided to give them a try and the result is surprising: while other civs have Knights or appriopriate UU's and research Gunpowder, I have lots of Cossacks (C3C, Regent, Huge, Continents) ;)

But I prefer Religious civs. Up to now I had best results with Celts and Arabs. In Vanilla Civ 3: Japanese or Indians.

Best regards,

Slawomir Stachniewicz.
