Which CivFanatics are involved with Civ V?

CIV4/CoL beta testers, I have a question. How did you get the ability to be a civ beta tester? did they put out things asking for beta testers, or did you contact them, or what? Were the betas restricted or open to anyone who was willing to join? Please answer. (I want to be a beta tester).

I got an invite from Soren to join Civ4 testing group on the word of someone else who was already in.

And don't forget that SMAC2 conversion that we tested. Shame they decided to use the Col2 conversion instead. ;)
That's mean... redoing Colonization instead of Alpha Centauri? Uggh.

I started with being invited for Civ4 testing, got an invitation from Soren. I had recently started to summarize known Civ4 information for Apolyton, and had also posted some fairly detailed thoughts on other strategy games, so that contributed. From there I just stayed on the team to help with the expansions.

At least with Civ4 and its expansions, the general rule was testers were handpicked by the development team, not applying for it in any way. Although for vanilla Civ4 and Warlords, there was a semi-open process to test patches that were about to be released.

Too bad i don't know anyone that can do that for me about Civ V :(

It also helped that I'd written some big mods for CTP2. If anything, the best way is community participation. If you add to the community, and to the game (or franchise so to speak) then the dev is more likely to notice you. Just "being a player" and asking for a free slot won't work in Firaxis case.

Yes I first started testing on the Civ3 Conquests beta, but that one was sub contracted by Firaxis to Breakaway Games. And Breakaway, put a general call out for testers and you filled out what ammounted to a resume of your gaming history. And at the time I had been running a MP league for PTW for a couple years.

So I guess that got me in the door and then my reputation and involvement in the community got me invited back to the Civ4 beta, then the Warlords and BTS.

So yes like many here I think the key is to prove you can analyze game mechanics well, are mature and can write reports well, and have a proven track record for helping the community.

Based on that people that are testing will recomment you to the dev's that are running the test, and hope for the best from their.

Ah, testing a Civ game... one can dream, I guess. ;)

I'm 99% positive at least one of my good friends (not mentioned in this thread so far) is a tester, as he keeps dropping hints about how he's busy "playing a certain game he has to play". I won't mention his name here since I'm sure he wouldn't want that, but it might be nice if he could put in a word for me. Just saying. :D

I cannot imagine Beta-testing would be all that fun. Arn't the versions the beta-testers test riddled with problems they have to try to locate and fix?

I do not know these things because my "Gaming Resume" would consis of nothing of importance .

I wonder what it would be like to be a civ5 beta teser. That would be really awsome. I would give anything to do that. It's funny, if someone picked me my gaming history would have consist of civ3. That game is awsome. I have been playing that ever since like 2004 or five. Sometime before civ4 came out. Although I dont think I would ever get picked. First, because I don't really like civ4 so I don't really want to mod for it. And my civ3 stuff always seems to not turn out well or already be thought of by someone else. So my 'community involvment' is mostly posting the ideas I gave for civ5 and talking about civ3 in general.

As I recall, I was primarily selected for a beta testing role in BtS on the basis of my contributions to the mod community (small though it was). I confess I was very surprised, & extremely flattered, when I got the e-mail from Soren. Wish it could happen again ;)!

Thts weird, this thread seemed to have disappeared from the forum. I am going to post again so it appears again.

Funny, this has turned from a "i wonder who is testing" to a "please let me test".
But seriously, I wonder whois testing now. When do they usually start it? I would say the more people who test it the better.

Well that is just human nature, but I will say that testing is not all fun and games, it can be painstakingly boring and requires alot of report writing to be done right. So a testers glimps of a game is certainly not free. And some testers in the past have only learned this after the fact.

I could see what your saying, all though I, personally have no problems with writing long reports (in fact, I used to play an online game where that was the majority of what i did. It was called tribalwars, pretty fun if you are a leader like I was perfecting your tribe) I could see how that could annoy people once they get a beta version of the game. I agree with you and although I have never tested a game myself I would assume that testing more for people who want to fix things then want to play the game early. Do they do anything to prevent people from just testing to play and not offering suggestions?, because I know I would be ticke if I was just giving out free copies of the my game.
