Which of these sid games did you like the best.?

My personal favorite would have to me Alpha Centari. While CivIII would rank next I felt it lack a lot of the neat things that made SMAC most enjoyable. In SMAC there where cool things like; putting notes on the game map, the ability to design your own units, Landmarks, a slew of preferences, contoured terrrain, and a superb diplomacy engine. History has shown you can design your own units, cause look at the diversity. It looks like they streamed lined CIVIII to make it more user friendly to the mediocre gamer. What do you think?

and shouldn't htis be in OT? or whereever, but not in Civ3 GD?????

well I don't mind...

1. Civ2 or 3
2. Civ3 or 2 (can't decide)
3. Colonization
4. didn't play SMAC - what i read was enough to hate it.

1. Civ 3
2. SMAC
3. Civ 2
4. Colonization

Actually I like them all very very much. Even now. Each got its own strengths and weaknesses and all are very addicting and fun games. But if I have to put them into a ranking this is how it would look like.

It shld indeed be in OT, where we already had at least one thread of such a nature in the few mths past.

My personal fave would be Civ3 and then Civ2 and SMAC. :)

I don't know where it is "suppose" to be. I put it here so we could talk about CIVIII compared to the other ones. One thing I am wondering is why they left so much of the fun stuff out of CIVIII, like I mentioned above.

Civ 1
Civ 2
Civ 3
SMAC

1) Civ-1 Who can forget the triumphant march of your winning troops when capturing a city. News flashes when discovering a new wonder. Spies you can expell. Volcanoes and pirates destroying improvements. Phalanx sinking battleship. In the beginning, the earth was without form . . .

2) Civ-2 Talking advisors. Wonder movies. Capturing a capital spliting a Civ in 2. Civil disorder spliting a Civ in 2. Trade caravans. Fundamentalism. Guerillas and Partisans. Airfields. Cease fires. Great soundtrack. Attitude advisor. Useful diplomats.

3) Civ-3 Culture. Strategic resources and luxuries. Improved graphics. Armies.

4) SMAC - disclaimer, I only played the demo. I couldn't get into the entire Sci-Fi world. Thats also one of the reasons I dont like the fantasy settings. Everyone knows the difference between a Knight and Cavalry and a Tank, but the space age and fantasy units?

SMAC - Helicopters that are useful. Secret Project movies. PSI combat. Leaders with personalities. Social Engineering and Diplomacy that deserves the name.

Civ I - that one got me hooked, the others are just improved sequels.

Civ III - Strategic Resources. (Of course I prefer Civ III over Civ I nowadays. It's just not as novel as Civ I.)

Civ II - Elvis. Sorry, I don't remember much else about Civ II. It was too much of an improvement rather than something really new. Maybe the best balanced game of the three Civs.

Haven't played colonization, my bad.

Yeah, I think thats what turned a lot of people off to it. CIV series is more to what people can relate too. You had to do a lot of reading to fully understand all the advances, and the graphics needed more color. But I would encourage all of you who never played it to give it a shot. Its in the bargain bens now, and there was just so much to it. ANways, I can't wait till PTW expantion comes out. And Colonization is still one of my all time favs I still play from time to time.

1. CIV3 - Greatest game of this cycle
2. CIV2 - Greatest game of its time
3. COL. - MM from hell, but fun none-the-less
4. SMAC - Just never hooked me....

Now when Colonization 2 comes out CIV3 will most likely take a back seat. :slay:

SMAC had some great ideas with social engineering and the ability to control vassal states on surrender that I would like to see someday in Civ. But the map always gave me a headache.

I love CivIII and have spent an unbelievable amount of hours on it since it arrived last fall.

I'm guessing my next big time waster will be MOO3 (if it ever becomes reality) or SimCity 4

1) SMAC
2) Civ 3 / 2
4) Civ1
5) Colonization

1) For me, SMAC has the better gameplay of the games listed here
Improved diplomacy / Units designs / Social engineering ...
For sure it takes a while to enter the particular atmosphere (I didn't hook at the beginning) but as soon as you understand the game mechanics, you will spend hours on it. It is a must if you think that the gameplay is the most important thing in a game.

2) and 3) I can't really decide between these 2 games because each one have big advantage. Civ 3 has a really improved AI and gameplay but Civ 2 has great scenarios. When Civ 3 will have as good scenarios as Civ 2, it will take definitely the second place.

3) The good ol' Civ 1 - I played it the first time in 1992 but I was really too young to appreciate the complexity of the game. But I had great fun with it, especially because I was discovering the game.

4) A good game but definitely behind the Civ and SMAC

SMAC of course is my favorite. It looks like most people that didn't say SMAC just read a bad review, played the demo, or had it but didn't play it for very long. But I could be wrong.

1. Civ3

Can't really decide between Civ2, SMAC & Colonization... Civ1 comes last only because after playing the other two it's a shallow experience by comparison IMO. Same thing applies with Civ2 in the wake of Civ3, but I did go back to Civ2 as my main game after I'd played SMAC for a while... I liked SMAC, but it never felt quite as satisfying as Civ. Colonization was so different to the other games that I find it hard to compare them, although I like the way elements of it have turned up in Civ3 (tradeable resources, for example).
