Which do you prefer?

After playing eight games of CivV i have become increasingly frustrated and disappointed with the diplomacy in the game, I don't enjoy the "AI plays as a human" game design at all, apart from not agreeing that it does that anyway, i really miss being able to have long term allies in the game and i find that knowing the AI does not appreciate me at all no matter how well i treat it extremely dissatisfying.

I was originally going to ask if you liked "AI plays as human" over "AI plays as real nation" but then i thought this was too vague and unclear, so instead i ask something less varied but more accurate, do you prefer the way diplomacy works in CivV or in Civ IV?

The Civ4 diplomacy, although for sure having flaws too, was much more appealing than what they have presented to us now.

Complete failure.

I actually agree with you. I miss being able to have occasionally stable relationships with an AI.

I usually liked to Adopt an AI in Civ 4 games, where I'd make one computer player my friend and ally for the entire game.

Admittedly, part of that was also so that when conquering an enemy city I didn't want, I could just unload it on my ally and let him handle it. I hate razing cities. :p

I miss the older style of diplomacy on some levels, although I feel like it was generally too easy to keep a lot of rival Civs happy in Civ IV, especially thanks to religion.

Yeah, that kind of vague roleplaying element was always what seperated Civilization from most other games to me, and I'm really disappointed that it's gone.

It's actually my only major quarrel with the game.

Obviously, Civ 4 is better right now. I think with all the patches Civ 5 could be just as good though. Civ 5 will never replace Civ 4, but they can both compliment each other. Right now, I only play Civ 5 because of the fancy graphics and unit animations. The gameplay is too easy though. It's still worth it to me though. For me I hope for about $1 per hour of entertainment. I have played about 70 hours and paid $60 for deluxe edition, so it passed that threshold. It's just that it could be so much better. I always have hope.

Civ IV diplomacy is VASTLY superior to Civ V.
Civ V pretend to play as humans but they do that very badly (no idea how to win a UN victory despite their being ripe with cash, no understanding that striking the enemy of your enemy is shooting yourself in the foot, never striking another civ with zero military unit just because it sits on another continent, and so on).
Worse, city states don't even remotely look like something human. They don't roleplay, and you can't talk to them in any meaningful way, just give them cash. They feel so gamey.
Civ V diplomacy is the most disappointing thing in the game. They said they'd put lots of effort on it but it's a clear failure in my opinion.
