Suvaryarman II (or whoever) and Montezuma are the worst (Stalin was the worst back in the day).

I will start with Monte... basically, you will be getting attacked early and often. Its too the point if he is next to me, I reset. The only way to survive is to build a huge military and wipe him out early, and when I do that, I fall behind on infrastructure/tech big time. This guy should be toned down a little.

Suvaryman II (however its spelled) really irks me... I can be at "Friendly" with him, and he will STILL attack out of nowhere (with an ally). I can't stand the guy. If anyone else near me declares war, he is also always happy to join in the frackus.

I personally find complete and total warmonger AIs to be incredibly annoying. Sure, stab me in the back when it suits their needs, if I am not protecting my cities strongly enough its my loss, but these two just go overboard.

Actually I don't really consider Monty a problem since he's so predictable. Either I go for early rush or make sure I have a border city on hills closest to him with good defenders.

Personally I hate the protective and expansive civs...either they are really hard to kill early, or they expand insanely fast (on Monarch+) which makes it hard both to expand peacefully and take out all their cities.

Good thread... I'm trying to prioritize who needs to be bumped off early in a couple of games. Look forward to more opinions.

I second the Gilgamesh comment. To top it off, he always seems to REX in my direction.

I don't mind Monty. At least I know I will get another "capital" city terrain location early on.

I find it more irritating when, due to geography, the next AI (any AI) is only a few tiles away on a large map.

I'm not a huge fan of Gilgamesh being right next to me. Because he's Protective, taking his cities can sometimes be a pain in the ass...and he always seems to expand so much. Tokugawa is also very annoying to have as a neighbor, though he doesn't pose much threat. Stalin is also incredibly annoying with his espionage.

Montezuma is kind of dumb militarily. He'll do things like attack you with a couple of units, when his military could not possibly take over anything. I guarantee it's a shared experience of all Civ players that we let out a "oh sh-" when your scout meets that bright green blotch against the black fog. lol

Probably Mansa Musa. Don't ask me why. He's just a bastard to deal with. It stems from an ugly multiplayer experience where he was either on the high end of cautious, or pleased with me, and my brother bribed him to attack me. Then, about 30-40 turns later, I bribed him to attack my brother. lol.
He's a mercenary.

Also, Gilgamesh. Absolute REXer. If he's not near you, he probably will be soon in some city found deep within the arctic that you wouldn't do anything but raze to. Either that, or he locks you in on some penninsula. I wouldn't mind him that much, but he's somewhat of a warmonger.

Shaka or Montezuma...
Though there are some others that can be annoying to have as neighbors too.
One neighbor I always enjoy having is America though. Especially since my monarch domination win. :}

China & Korea can be pains too... I have always had trouble warring with China and Korea is usually very aggressive when they are a fairly sized nation. At least from what I've seen.

I'm not a fan of Suryavarman or Gilgamesh either... mostly Gilgamesh though.

It's definitely not Monty. Just stick a well defended city next to his border and he'll war himself into oblivion.

The people I hate starting next to are Joao, Catherine or Genghis. The first two because they seem to love to REX-- A lot-- And the last not because he's a warmongerer, but because he always seems to fixate on me and spends his time blowing up an improvement or poisining the water in one of my cities. It's really annoying.

I don't understand why people complain about Gilgamesh. Whenever he shows up, he tends to do nothing and go nowhere. At least, in my games.

Monty,Shaka,August and Louis.

The one I really hate is Charlemagne.

If I bump into him early, I declare war straight off and harass. It's when I don't bump into him early that I really struggle to deal with him. He'll rex, and his UB means he won't be punished for it.

He's a complete sod. I hate running Vassalage, but that and religion can be the only way of keeping him off your back.

Monty can be a complete psycho. You can give him tribute and he'll still try it on soon as he can. He'll declare war even when he can't possibly win. This also makes him easy to isolate diplomatically though. A pain but not unbeatable. He'll end up backward during the late game (I don't understand that. His UB and spiritual trait are useful for building up and teching quickly early on with the right strategy and I love playing as him). He's really good if you share religions though.

Justinian and Isabella can be right pains, but militarily manageable. Justinian is very dangerous fo a human player. The AI doesn't seem to know how to play with him.

Genghis Kahn can be ok, actually. There are ways of keeping the guy sweet and he won't tech all that fast. He doesn't care all that much about religion typically. He will ask you to join in wars. If you do you'll keep him sweet.

Gilgamesh is a right pain, but he won't ever adopt anything but monarchy and US, which means you can let him rex, overextend himself militarily, overtake technologically then go kick his arse. Again, great to play as because of his courthouse replacement.

It's not the ones next door I dread. They're easier to get at. It's the ones 2 or 3 doors down I dread.

I HATE GHANDI AND ASOKA
mainly because i am still at cheiftin and warlord... so they dont spread there religion to me :( and if i dont start mystism i allways have to settle for confusionism or christianity..

i also hate having napolean next to me, he likes to rex in my games... i once spread religion to him and he rexed, then he squised me...
i then had to change at 500 ad from a diplo win to a cultural game, which isnt fun switching focus, as my wonders were more spread out... needless to say i DID win a cultural victory. but i almost lost to a dominance

another annoying one... to have close but not next to you is gigla, because if he rexs and you cant stop it... he is annoying

Most REX'ers are the most annoying - always dislike having Cathy or Joao next to me, The mid-range aggressors can be frustrating - like Genghis with Keshik or JC with Praetorians can be somewhat slowing.

Warmongers generally aren't too bad - cept a little care can be needed dealing with them - and you have to watch that 2 aren't after you.

If looking for early conquering all protective are nothing short of a pain, in fact recently Japan who rarely allow you to see much started next to me, and even with Praetorians (got randomed JC :)) found them surprisingly frustrating - 12 Praetorians vs 7 archers with various Promo's on a hill with 40% defence and Kyoto (Capital) wasn't falling!! In fact 1 survived with 1.7/3 left :(

Next had Sitting Bull next to me - but I could almost imagine him being unconquerable - he cranks out units - protective ones too - I'd find myself looking elsewhere to early rush!

Overall Order (1 worst - 5 5th worst)

1. Joao
2. Cathy
3. Genghis Khan
4. Tokugawa
5. Gilgamesh

And just for giggles - Favourite neighbour - Napolean, he REX's and is always weak = Easy REX via conquering :)

My ultimate nightmare is scouting eastward and finding TMIT.

It's not the ones next door I dread. They're easier to get at. It's the ones 2 or 3 doors down I dread.

This is so true. The final epic war between myself and my couple vassals covering half of the planet against the other guy with his couple of vassals...we always start on opposite sides of the world.

And for some reason, it has been Justinian twice in a row. Suspicious. :shifty:

Just about any Protective civ really, epically Sitting Bull. Unless you attack super early hes pretty much unkillable until siege, and by then he has tons of highly promoted archers/longbows.

My ultimate nightmare is scouting eastward and finding TMIT.

 I wonder what the intro message would be. Who knows though, maybe you'd catch me on a warrior rush and wipe me out by turn 30 or so .

As for troublesome AIs, definitely Shaka should be on anyone's list. Toku is a hassle because you can't please him early on. Gilgamesh is horrible news because he's very difficult to rush and isn't overly peaceful before HR bonuses kick in.

The other warmongers are pretty annoying too, and in no particular order really since many of them like police state or other doubtful later-on civics and will pick a target...sometimes you can't direct them elsewhere in time.

Also, you want sitting bull in your games because he draws warmongers like flames draw moths, and he's pretty peaceful. However, you do NOT want the anti-rush cow spawning 8 tiles away from you :(.

Gilgamesh. Really annoying, tries to REX up all the land, and isn't easy to get rid of.

³ that! He's just a culture city spamming whore

I couldn't agree more :p. Last monarch game he protected me from being attacked although I was weaker. But they disliked him more. Of course when I had Oromo Warriors I backstabbed him and conquered almost whole his land. But Giglamesh almost ruined the game for me. Luckly I was a culture whore and I won a cultural victory. If the game would last 100 turns more, Giglamesh would have dominated and killed me for sure. (he already attacked twice at the end and he had 3 vazals and the only free civ next to me was Pacal II his favourite vazal/friend type)
