fruno, good to see you have finally discovered the secret of Civ3. I thought you still live in the past. ;)

On topic: Persians are my all time favorite. Immortals can shatter anything. :D

I personally think that the hoplite is the best of them all when it comes to specific units. It's like getting pikeman that cost less in the begining of the game. It really give you an edge.

Oh yeah, sure, the hoplite is a really good unit if you're playing TO WIN...

Personally, I like to humiliate and degrade my opponent. And the best way in all the world to do that is with those little flaming gay, pink musketeers. Oh, yeah, that's right Mr. AI, you thought you were hot stuff with those Mounted warriors last age, but this is the age of the musketeer, the age of disco!!!

Check out our cute hats. We're taking over this town with style!

offence is the best defence!
those immortals for 30 shields are just amazing! 4.2.1 compared to 4.3.2 for a knight (70 shields)!
and i hate to have a well defended city and all improvements are pillaged!

@ frunobulax

i never realy cared for scenarios yet, but an asimov scenario sounds very appealing to me! fighting the mule or something :goodjob:
and i think i read something about a civ2 dune scenario once.
by now i'm also waiting for the editior!!!

Hmmn, methinks we'll have a great modding community when the Editor arrives. [Hi MacSoft!]

Back on topic: Immortals rock! (As do the UUs of whichever Civ I'm playing).

Hi Thunderfall,

yep, I'm in the 21st Century (finally)... strictly Civ3 from now on !

I must admit to now being a fan of Roman Legionaries, having just anihilated the Egyptians and Aztecs, and am halfway through thrashing the Greeks (Hoplites ?... pah !! We eat 'em for breakfast). Have 12 Elite Legionaries, and have got 3 Great Leaders so far :king:

Chinese and Russians.....closet communist i guess...btw...

I bought CIV 3 early summer and basically played it a few times in the same style that i used o play civ2. I though "ok. its the same deal, maybe cuter". Then it basically sat on my desk till this month. A few weeks ago I had the day off and the wife was at work, so I popped it in, next thing you know Ghengis Khan appears in my army and is being chased pink guys with funny hats, (maybe I need to read the manual-I thought-crap thats whats happening when I build a road over an iron deposit, etc, etc), Now I totally hooked again like I was when I first play CIV II...."oh crud its 6:00 AM--I GOTTA GO TO BED!!!"....etc...

peace...(or war):king:

6:00 AM? Ahh, yes, I remember the days I could do that. Just last Saturday, in fact. Kind of fuzzy now, but I do, more or less, remember.
:crazyeye:
Who do I play most? Americans, by a long shot. They're a sentimental favorite, though if I had less on my to-do list, I might make Teddy Roosevelt or George Washington leader heads (nothing against Honest Abe, though)...

I've played other Civs just to test the game-play benefits of each "trait." The Persians were pretty good, but the Immortal was so dang good by itself, I was afraid it might've skewed the the game.
Right now (or at least last night), I'm playing the Germans on ZEB's Earth (huge) right now... but I have to step around some rule mods (and I'm not entirely sure what they are).
What little I've gleaned in the past few months:
*So far, the Industrious trait is a favorite.
*Commercial was weak. The extra commerce (that I remember) wasn't that significant, neither was the supposed drop in corruption. I think, when the editor comes out (it's still coming out, right?), that I'll have to make some adjustments to reduce corruption (maybe that should be a new thread).
*Militaristic: Unit promotions haven't exactly taken off. Of course, I've been playing with the random seed preserved, so I haven't been able slap fate around into coughing up some better luck. That said... the unit promotions in militaristic *seem* about average. Bummer.
*Scientific: *Slightly* cool with the extra advances, but they don't come so often as to make the quality a significant force in the average game (IME).
*Expansionist: Like the scout at the beginning, if only to figure out optimal placement for the next city (especially important if following the Rapid Expansion Strategy). I like the better goodies from goody huts, too, but how this quality plays really depends on the map you get dropped on. The smaller it is, and the closer the competition, the less effective it is. If you're expansionist, and you get lucky enough to start out in the middle of nowhere with no close neighbors, it rocks. If you wind up sandwiched between, say, Japan and the Aztecs, that lil' explorer guy doesn't do a heckuva lotta good.

I usually play the Babylonians because I am a builder and nothing makes me happier than cheap temples and libraries. But I recently acquired a respect for the Chinese as well. The riders are formidable and the industrial/militaristic combination makes them great for a late-game, modern age, war machine!

I just started a nightmare game on a Huge map, Archipelago, 70% water, wet, cool, 3 billion world with all 16 civs activated. I am playing the Aztecs and have a new HEALTHY respect for the Jaguar Warriors - not as warriors mind you - but because they act as substitute scouts and really helped me scoop up a lot of goody huts and get the lay of the land to build a well positioned empire. Considering there were so many civs it really was a race for land. Now, I am feeling the religious nature of the civ helping tremendously to expand my empire by culture flipping or by expanding my borders. It is a great, non-violent way to get more land!

Industrial, Commercial and Religious are three traits I love in civ - they can't be beat.
