I'm getting bored of playing Civ 3. I was wondering what game I should buy. I'm looking for something like Civ 3, but forcuses more on managing your empire instead of building it. Here are the games I've heard a lot about:

Medieval; Total War
Europa Universalis 2 (sp?)
Hearts of Iron
Age of Empires 2

Perhaps AOE 2 would be best as Medieval still has a turn based element, costs more and takes a long time to complete a normal game.

AOE 2 is the best you have there, although if you are looking into the RTS genre, I strongly recommmend Warcraft III.

I don't like AOE 2 but I don't like RTS it's all about getting the largest army the fastest.

Thats not true with AOE when you play against competent players as you usually don't have enough time to build a large a unit and its more about how you use the units.

Hearts of Iron is only about WWII, not really like Civ3, but it's great if you are a WWII fan.

AoE2 isn't really what you're looking for...

You would be better with Medieval: Total War or Europa Universalis 2. I prefer EU2 myself :)

I got AoE2 (AoK: TC) for Christmas and have really been enjoying it - a lot. Maybe because its my first time w/ a RTS game, but it is a refreshing change of pace for me. Learnng the different civs and units has / is a lot of fun. I'd recommend it.

Now, EU2 is the game I've been waiting for (Mac port due out soon).
