So which religions should I shoot for? Judaism seems nice for the wonders and the GPT. I've not messed with some of the more war like ones (Tengriism or Mesopotamic). Are they really worth it?

Tengriism is great early on if you have horses

Andeaism is almost always a good one to shoot for

Druidism/Shamanism I'd forget about unless you're playing on a low difficulty level (you don;t stand much chance of getting either of them first on higher levels)

Tengriism is good if you only have one horse resource or herd.

Kemetism and Hellenism are good for science.

Buddhism is great for gold I am told.

Mesopotamian is supposed to be good for early war. Asrtu for war in the middle ages.

As stated Tengrii if you have Horse resource or can trade for horses. (matches your sig line quite well it does! ;) ).

After Tengrii I shoot for Judaism. But sometime I'll snag Shinto along the way to Judaism, (sometimes mesopot will fall to me too) and then go for Taoism. I try to get 3-4 religions because I never play with more than 15 AI.

My Favs:
For mass buttloads of xp: Asatru
For a GREAT promotion access: Taoism
For a really cool way to make super fast moving armies: Confucianism
For strong production and some nice pets: Voodoo
For powerful Priests(and a lot of them): Judaism
For an unbreakable economy: Scientology
To annoy your neighbors by spreading your religion throughout and benefiting greatly by so doing: Mormon
For powerful horses: Tengriism
For a LOT of religious buildings that can form a powerful core building set in conjunction with the wonders that add yields/commerces per religious building: Mesopotamianism (Yoruba can do this too but I feel Meso is better at adding other military benefits such as free promos.)
For growth: Druid and Shaman
For reduced maintenance: Shinto
For research: Andeanism and Hellenism
To make the most of a city with a LOT of quarries: Naghualism

As stated above, but THEN i go for Christianity, because it gives the King Richards Crusade, whereas it gives a FREE Crusader about every 10-15 turns or so with a 15 str unit.

I prefer to catch as many religions as possible and build possibly all their Wonders, but my "must have" ones are:

Mesopotamism: especially for Hammurabi Steele of Laws (free Courthouses in each city long before CoL), Apadana Palace and non-GW temples in my main military city (free promotions and XP).

Zaratustrianism: excellent Wonders; the best of them is (IIRC) Seti Pir: -50% upgrade cost, free Morale for most units.

Christianity: King Richard's Crusade is a must in my main military city.

Hellenism: excellent Great Wonders, Monastery gives Pankration (+5% strength, -20% upgrade cost).

Lower in priority: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, Kemetism, Judaism, Islam, Naghualism, Andeanism, Asartu (very nice Great and Small Wonders and other buildings), Tengri (excellent for mounted units) and Shamanism (1/3 cities with no pollution from buildings and free Hillsman I, 1/9 cities with free Woodsman I and more GP).

Optional: Druidism, Ngaiism, Kanaanism, Janism, Sikhism, Mormonism, Scientology (nice buildings, some of them give special promotions or XP but nothing very special, no special GW) and Voodoo (nice buildings but not a very great GW).

I hope I have not forgotten anything...

The original designer felt that you should be able to change your religion as needed just like civics.

Is there in any way shape or form you are presently working on, whereas you can have MORE than one Holy City with your "culture."? Meaning like in RL, this city really has a, lets say Christian atmosphere, then the next town has a Buddha type because they have Ho-mungs or something like them??

Not what I a working on at the moment. You can already have such diversity, although I have had 17 holy shrines all in the same city which seems a bit excessive and only caused me minor revolution problems.

Traditionally your whole nation would have had one religion (polytheistic or otherwise). It is only in recent times that the idea of multiple religions living harmonusly in the same nation has been raised.

I'm putting ALL religions in my capital (making it holy city for all religions + adding their Great Prophet buildings) :)

Well... if I play with Divine Prophets, I start all religions in my Capital (I also build most of Great and Small Wonders there to maximize GP output). For most of the game I run Organized Religion or Free Religion and I have had no problems. Revolutions always on.

I had problems with non-state religion only once. It was when one of the Holy Cities was a remote city, former enemy capital, and I did not build enough buildings reducing crime and unhappiness and enhancing stability. As a result, I had a long-lasting revolt with lots of enemy troops pillaging improvements. Fortunately, I have not lost any city. Since that I do not spare maintenance costs on these buildings...

I guess you also use 'unlimitted wonders' then? To me that option almost feels like cheating, especially as the total number of Wonders in the game rises.

Under Multiple Religion Spread Option the game still decides what city a religion is founded in (not the player). I rarely get 2 Founded religions in the same city, much less for 3 or 4 and I've never had All in one city much less my Capital.

And that is with Unlimited Wonders On too.

I don't use Divine Prophets much any more if at all. And never use Limited (it could be removed for all I care as I see it as a shackle to game play)

:hmm: Never tried that, is that a Starting game option? I always play with Divine Prophets ON.(I just like the extra Prophets showing up ALOT:D)

And i completely agree about the Limited also, (to me Useless). Same now goes for that city crap you used to fight about:p, useless now.

Multiple Religion Spread is a BUG setting.

By not choosing DP or Limited or Choose Religions In the starting game set up options, you get the BtS default that allows you to found more than 1 religion (up to 7 in default BtS) but since we have 26 religions now Multiple allows more than 7 religions in your empire or the AI's.

Wow! Finally! someone else from the Team sees it, how useless and unwarranted City Limits really are! I need to mark this day on the calendar! I almost fainted! You've made my day SO! :goodjob: Now if the rest of the Team could just see it.

I agree too - I don't use them any more, BUT ONLY BECAUSE other factors effectively limit you (i.e. - the changes to maintenance have rendered them unnecessary)

Agreed. And Thanks for agreeing.

But even back when I argued about it maintenance (and other factors) was making the CL useless/unnecessary especially for the way I like to play.

Now how hard would it be to strip it out and deflate the Mod's size just a little bit? :mischief: :D
