WHO: AIDS is the leading cause of death in women 15-44 world wide.

What I find truly funny is how there was nonsense in this thread about how AIDS is not a "gay disease" which I guess was an attempt to distance with where the infection was most prominent (among gays) when first discovered in the USA. Then there was some obligatory Christian bashing, because what else goes better with a Gay discussion? Finally, everybody would like to simply ignore that if folks just lived according to a more biblical standard, such as no gayness or promiscuity, that the disease would not have infected or killed nearly as many people.

How about some personal accountability?

The only folks with AIDS that I have an abundance of sympathy for are the children born with it & those who get it through a transfusion. They are the only true innocents.

"When first discovered in the USA". That was like what, 30 years ago? That's definitely current in medical science.

Again, though I've spelled this out before, here's the problem.

The majority of infections in sub-Saharan Africa are women. These aren't, for the most part, prostitutes or even "loose" women. They're women who have unfaithful husbands and cannot say no. I repeat, the majority infections are women who are not "loose" nor prostitutes. Check out the plight of women in some areas of the world. They don't have the standing nor the education to get away from their husbands, their family's support, not to mention the social standing.

~1/8th of new infections are children who get HIV during childbirth. That's ~375,000 cases.

You can have sympathy for people who make mistakes, even fatal ones.

^ Contre, you are right. I have no beef with the information regarding SA. I was speaking directly about my country.

Just because it was 30 years or so ago doesn't make the historical fact any less valid. All I did was explain the origin of the stigma.

@contre: How can the majority of infections be such women? Wouldn't there be an equal number of the men who are their husbands?

59% in sub-Saharan Africa are women. I don't know specifically how they break down. What I outlined was a very common phenomenon of families that have a husband go to the city to find work, sleep around, and come back to their wives. I didn't mean to imply that the majority of infections are women in the rural areas themselves, nor that they are the majority of the women infected. Only that the disparity of standing between men and women makes women more vulnerable.

Yes, but how is that relevant to today's AIDS statistics? I believe that was what people were arguing about in the thread, the CURRENT distribution of AIDS cases WORLDWIDE.

So follow the example of Abraham?

Sure. If a booming voice from the sky (before the technology we have now) commands you, then you obey. Then later the voice after having tested your faith sets things right ........................................................... of course Jacob might have something to say about it.

I guess you watched Year 1 the other day.

Ah, good old fashioned biblical standards.

You should wait for one retort to your biblical bashing before engaging in a second.

Are we seriously saying that people with AIDS in some way deserve it?

Who said anything even remotely resembling that? Before you quote me you better make sure you understand what I posted.

Ok, so who in today's world now calls AIDS a gay disease? It was, it is not now. Is there something you need me to explain to you further? Is there something you do not understand?

I was speaking of his multiple partners, not the potential very late term abortion.
