Donitz and Rohm having a tête-à-tête in a submarine with some Marlene Dietrich in the background and some Chardonnay.

You left out the Panzer Pope.

Albert Speer. I highly respect his work.

Donitz and Rommel were actually pretty interesting people. Neither one had a real hand in the Holocaust, and both treated Allied POW's honorably. (Donitz did get convicted in a war crimes trial, but it was pretty much bunk. He basically got tried for planning a war - what else is a soldier supposed to do?) Probably the only two high ranking members of the Nazi war machine that I have any respect for.

John Rabe was not a member of the government, but was a member of the Nazi party. I actually have a great deal of respect for him because of what he did at Nanking.

They threw the book at Doenitz for sinking unarmed civilian merchants. Again, Rommel, along with most of the German Heer commanders, were not Nazis; in fact, Hitler hated them, and they hated Hitler. However, he gave them a war, and every good commander desires war to prove himself in; after all, Guderian, Rommel, Boch, Runstedt, these men are famous for their victories in the German campaigns.

It's gotta be Adolf Hitler, right? He's the most Nazi-ish of the Nazis.

Phh. Like the Allies were any better at that. It strikes me as fundamentally unjust to imprison a soldier for destroy civilian ships transporting military goods or resources to make military goods when we mass bombed cities for the purpose of destroying the factories that made similar goods.

Don't get me wrong, the upper Nazi party officials should have been hung, just like a lot of them were. But striking out at honorable soldiers because their government was horrible isn't right.

Anyway. It was a long time ago.

Arthur Nebe. Resisted from right at the heart of the beast, and should be more well-known. One of the Einsatzgruppen commanders, worked to try to reduce the number of killings, excecuted after the July 44 plot failed.
