Pretty simple question, really.

Should Anheuser-Busch, who have been brewing Budweiser for less than 1.25 centuries, have world-wide trademark rights to the name?
- OR -
Should the Budejovicky Budvar brewery in the Czech Republic, who have been making a beer that became known as Budweiser for over 7 centuries, get the rights to world-wide patent?

Personally, I think Anheuser-Busch should drop the name and give it over to Budejovicky Budvar. It's just the right thing to do. Rename their old Budweiser line to Billy Beer maybe...oh wait, that was taken once. Possibly Bubba beer. ;)

i dont really understand... are there currently two beers being produced under the same name?

Why would any brewery in Europe want to be associated with the name Budweiser? Whenever I hear that name I equate it to bad beer.

It all boils down to who can front the cash for the rights anyway. So wish away all you want, it won't make a blind bit of difference. Personally I'm wishing for the Czechs.

I reckon they should be allowed to share it as they both have reasonable claims and the details are arguable being so long ago.

But I really believe that Busch should stop peddling tasteless slop as premium, because it isn't fit to lick Budvar's boots in terms of flavour.

 They could start calling it what it is too. Cr**p.

It is my understanding that in some countries , the Czech brewery has the rights to the name, whereas the Anheuser-Busch brewery has the rights in other countries.

The Czech Budweiser is a totally different type of beer. I've never had it, but have heard that it's quite good.

No argument here. Though personally on the rare occasions that I do imbibe, I'm a whiskey man, so I think all beer is doo-doo.

so can someone post up the label of the one we get in the UK.. and then the other one?

I'm guessing budweiser.eu is up for grabs?

Well, I just did a search for "Budweiser UK" and it popped up with this site, so I guess your Budweiser over there is the Anheuser-Busch stuff.

I found this snippet on the Budvar company page:
"United Kingdom

Budweiser Budvar has long been the best selling Czech lager in the UK and its popularity is increasing. Based in London, Budweiser Budvar UK Ltd started operating in the UK in 2001 as the wholly owned subsidiary of the brewery."

Anheuser Busch should get it, they could probably buy out that brewery with little or no effort. Wisconsin is about half and half, half Miller, half Bud.

I personally can't really stand the taste of beer, I prefer something life Smirnoff, or maybe Jack D's Hard Cola something that is somewhat appealing. Though I have yet to try Leini's Honey Weiss or one of their many, many other flavors. I can never spell their full name right.

I didn't know there was another version of budweiser. Here in oz, real beer is ~$35 a case, the US version of Budweiser is closer to $50. I don't know how it can sell a single bottle. My vote goes to giving the czech's the rights, make the US brewers change the name to "canoe beer", as that is what the stuff currently called budweiser here actually is.

I've seen both for sale here. But there are some differences in the bottles. But to be fair the only people who are going to make the mistake are people who drink the Anheuser-Busch version. Then if they make that mistake they end up with a better quality beer. I don't think someone who is going to choose the Budejovicky Budvar bersion will accidently pick up the other one

I think regardless of who has been brewing longer, whoever applies for the trademark first gets it.

As for the beer itself, not one of my favs, but as far as domestics go, I will drink it sometimes. I certainly wont turn my nose up at it if it is free and cold at a friends house.

I don't get what the problem here is: one company brews beer, while the other distributes coloured water. What's to get confused about? ;)

You can't really argue with that first part (or the second part either  ). Can't really go wrong with free beer, no matter how horrible it may be.
