Who's good with blurry flags?

Found this guy at a site reviewing Sand in the Whirlwind, a little wargame on the Senussi campaign in Western Egypt, 1915-1916. The resolution is lousy. Can anyone help me with the nationality? All I know is that it represents a British colonial unit.

Looks like a modern Eqyptian flag. The problem is that at that time, Egypt was not independent of Britain and would not have had that flag. Maybe the game designer put the wrong flag on the unit?

Oryx, I think you might have it! Like you, I was expecting the Protectorate flag (3 crescent & star pairs on a red background?) for Egyptian units, and didn't think of a nonhistorical one. Thanx.
