WHY 19 Civs?

I think barbarians are also counted as a Civ in-game, so that would make it 20, which is a round number.

Also, I'm hopping on the "so-they-can-release-new-civs-with-expansions" bandwagon.

Definitely for the expansions... grrrrr.... and, of course, I'm one of those civ fans that just HAS to purchase all the expansions. And special editions. And so on so forth.

19 because:

19 - 1 (you) = 18.
18 = 12 + 6
6*2 = 12

Because 19 hexagons forms a neat shape.

It would make a very neat diplo screen.

EDIT: And the expansion will probably include 18 more.

Not sure, probably just trying to not overkill on civs before expansions. Hopefully there won't be a hardcoded limit anymore.

It sounds like you will be able too, Gogf, but that it win involve Coding. I hate coding. I hope they make soem sort of editor so we don't haev to friggin code.

I think it was announced somewhere that they were doing away with the hardcoded limit for the number of civs.

Most of the theories sound good so far, though the 19 hexagon one is a little far off the map. ;) My guess is it all boils down to economics. The first set of civs has to leave most Civ fanatics (and other Civ players) as either "content" or at worst "annoyed". If we're too happy with that initial set then we'll never buy the expansions, and if too many are "furious" then the game will flop.

I see no reason why not 19. Maybe the people who made the civs liked prime numbers.

Also there is a diplomacy aspect since in the game DIPLOMACY, they made it be 7 so that if the game did end up with one side verses the other there would be more diplomacy since one side would want the player which would make their side more powerful. So with 19 there is more diplomacy in case you are playing with all powers. Just an idea.

How about 19 Civs with Barbarians being the 20th?

It is officialy announced, there will be 19 playable civs in Civ4. I dosn't care much about wich Civs are in, to me it is more interesting WHY there are 19 Civs, not 18 or any other straight number of civs. Any toughs about?

( 5 * ( 2 ^ 2 ) ) - 1 = 19

,...

i think the HEX idea is the best one offered so far.
that WOULD make a neat little diplo screen.

the "leaving for expansion" thing is dumb (if popular) because 18 would work just as well in that argument.
the only ones so far to actualy answer the answer of "why 19?" are the hex thing and the "release date of sept the first"
